Hi Dick,

I hope you got (and accepted) my apology on the other thread. Sorry
for being a jerk.

In answer to your question, it's a famous Eric Johnson recording. From
wikipedia: "His critically-acclaimed, platinum selling 1990 recording
Ah Via Musicom produced the single "Cliffs of Dover", for which
Johnson won the 1991 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental
Performance."

Hi Clay,

Accepted and no problems here Clay. Glad you did not leave. I had no idea
the bass player was your friend and had no idea who he was. Heck I hardly
know Eric Johnson. I'm sure your friend's great player, considering his
impressive output. It was just a tiny clip that all set this is motion and
eventually turned ugly and nonsensical again. I lost my patience too.

I will check out EJ some more.

Take care and thanks for resolving this.

Regards,

Dick,

Here's a video of Eric playing Cliffs of Dover live. Pretty awesome
rock guitar playing.

Thanks. Will do. How do I come by this title? I remember Rita Reijs singing
the tune and that this was the first line. Is that correct for the lyrics of
"They say it's wonderful"? Maybe that's how I got the idea.

The song starts "They say that falling in love is wonderful. So
wonderful. So they say." Johnny Hartman's version with Coltrane is
amazingly great. You should have that album.

......and how about Jesse???
I admire Martijn as well but he should work a little bit on his charisma. He
is always looking as if he just has been cleaning the cowshed and still has
to milk the cows right after the concert.

That's funny because I always got the impression that he had *just*
milked the cows. Funny how perceptions can be so different when it
comes to jazz. Really makes you think. Yes sir.

Yeah, Jesse is his equal for sure on the bop front. However, Jesse rarely
plays straight ahead bop these days. As a sidesman, he's often into eclectic
and contemporary styles that ... eh .... I do not always favor. Check out
his work with the Mona Lisa Overdrive on Youtube. Not really my cup of tea.
Martijn is often working in the traditional style (though he is a super
fusion player too). So that's probably why.

But Jesse is among the best bop players in the world, no doubt about it. His
CDs prove that ...

Both Jesse and Martijn are world class. We should be proud of them. Downside
is that to mean anything in the world of jazz guitar over here you have to
be compete with them. And they have raised the bar ridiculously high. I'm
glad I'm not a pro.

But I'm sure someone will find some jazz snob content in these words again.
Or be pissed. Or insulted. Or WTF. You can't give any opinions here these
days. This group is a shipwreck.

No snob content established but see it in a wider perspective. These 2
giants also have to compete nowadays with a considerable number of other
mega-talents anywhere in the world especially in the US. Do I have to
mention Adam Rogers, Jonathan Kreisberg etc.? (I'm sure people here can name
a few more!). What I mean is that if you want to compete with them you are
in fact struggling with a standard that has grown extremely high worldwide
over the last years.

True Hans. I don't see how anyone can top these kind of guys. You need more
than hard work or even talent. You need mega talent and some genetic
headstart to count these days.

You don't need genetic engineering I think. Soul, good timing and the
right notes will do ;)
