MUSICIANS WIN A VICTORY AT DELTA AIRLINES

As a result of the leadership of the AFM, the work of AFM Director of
Government Relations Hal Ponder, Local 802 President Mary Landolfi, and
the on-going participation of Local 802 members, Delta airlines has
decided to officially accomodate musicians traveling with instruments.
Delta will now allow all small musical instruments and guitars on board
all flights. In addition to its carry-on policy, Delta also improved
its checked baggage policy. Checked items can now measure up to 120
linear inches and weigh up to 100 pounds.
The AFM and Local 802 have lifted their boycott of Delta and are
currently urging all other airlines to adopt Delta's policies.
Thank you to the members that responded to the Local 802 request for
written accounts of airline horror stories, to the many that conveyed
the challenge of flying with an instrument to the union, and to all the
musicians that contributed to this effort.
This was an important first step towards adressing the difficulties
musicians face traveling with instruments.
We will send out another email shortly that provides a more detailed
protocol for preparing to fly Delta under the new policy.
Please feel free to contact our Political Director, Julia Smith, with
any comments or questions or to get involved in this campaign.
She can be reached at 212-245-4802 X 176 or jsm...@local802afm.org.

Al: It's a big step in the right direction and this will certainly benefit
anybody who travels with an instrument. Next time we hear somebody moaning
about union dues and "what have they ever done for me?"; let's show them
this article. .....joe

Alright, I guess I have to join the union now, they finally did
something that helps working musicians (the non-broadway types). Is
there any factoid to print up about this, just in case I run into an
uninformed Delta worker?

thanks for the post on this.

Haven't seen anything formal. I clipped this from the Yahoo Brazilian Music
group. Might be something else on the web.

Funny I think at least each individual AFM chapter is trying to take
personal credit for this...and I think it a few other people involved - non
union that also helped and you're still at the mercy of a flight attendant
to say there is enough room.

still better though.

Don't believe it for a minute. They will still not let you take it on
the plane. Aletter went around a few years ago from the AFM. No
airline honored it!

That was very different though. That was a loosely worded arrangement
with the TSA, not the airlines. This is now a specific airline
company policy in writing on their own website.

Yes, they still have an "out" with the wording of "if there is room at
the time of boarding". But in my experience as long as you are not
among the very last boarding there is always room.

Also now the solo discretion seems to be in the hands of the on-plane
attendants who were always the most helpful and willing to accommodate
anyway.

The problem will still be if one leg of a multi-stop flight is on a
cummuter plane which hs no overhead bins. Still have to pay attention
to the plane type when booking flights.

This has been my experience, as well. The lack of space on the shorter,
"commuter" flights has been a bigger problem than employess with attitudes.
This is of course compounded by the fact that difficulties throughout the
airline industry (particularly since 9/11) have forced the airlines to cut
back on the number of flights overall as well as the number of non-stops, so
a traveller's flight options are more limited than ever.

Anyone who flies a lot should just break down and get a Calton.

Saved me thousands on Advil alone...

Doug -

Do you check your guitars with Calton cases? Gate check? Are you
comfortable with that, confident that they won't be damaged?

Yeah, the cases are custom fitted. You can throw them around and run
over them. Never had a problem. The only drag, of course, is when they
lose it. No fun in that.
