Can anyone contrast from experience the acoustic characterisitcs of an
archtop with an oval whole vs. one with standard f holes.

My experience is that the oval hole guitars have a slightly deeper bass, and a
touch less midrange than guitars with standard f holes. I base this judgement
on my own 1973 Gibson Howard Roberts, as well as 1 oval hole D'Aquisto, and 2
oval hole Monteleones that I had the opportunity to play.

Best wishes,
Perry

I have an oval hole Victor Baker and a few f-hole and s-hole archtops,
all carved solid woods with floating pickups, and my experience is that the
f-hole guitars are much punchier, with a fatter midrange while the oval hole
has deeper bass and a thinner overall sound.

Perry,
I find the same to be true with having more bass with the oval hole
guitar. I played my f hole guitar and an oval hole guitar built by
John Zeidler. Even though the oval hole was an 18" and my f hole
guitar was a 17", there was a considerable amount of more bass. I
thought it was too much with the 18". I didn't really notice too much
difference of midrange but the bass was obvious.

Morey:

Your response is exciting as I am getting ready to have Victor make me a
guitar and was seriously considering an oval sound hole. Would you mind if
I phoned you, if you prefer not, would you mind commenting further on your
Victor Baker.

In addition to what others have said, my experience is that oval hole
instruments have a louder and more vivid "near field" sound; they
sound great to the player and to those pretty close to the guitar.
But they do not project quite as well as a good f-hole instrument.
