A 1953 Gibson ES-125 or a 1978 Fender Telecaster (Fender humbucker in
the neck, but the guitar is a modified standard Tele, not a Tele
Custom). Lately, I've been using the Gibson most of the time, though
the Tele has the sentimental value - bought it while visiting
Minneapolis in the summer of 1991 for $600 I earned working two menial
jobs 70-80 hours a week.
1966 Fender Deluxe (no reverb) that I bought with my tax refund this
year. It's only been out as far as rehearsals so far (it's been awhile
since I played for an audience), but I plan to get it out there soon...
That's it, really.
I never get called for any gigs, especially top 40 or country, but I do
have the Tele just in case...

OK Matt; I'll bite. I mainly use an old Epiphone Winsor, single
cutaway, thinline hollowbody, single neck pickup guitar, and a Clarus
amp with a Mesa Boogie cab, one 12" EV speaker. That's my rig for jazz
when it's not too loud. But, I also own a Strat, and a stereo rack
with a Hughes & Kettner Access pre-amp, a Lexicon LXP-5 effects unit,
and a Tube Works Mosvalve 500 watt power amp. I run it through one or
two of the Boogie cabs, depending on how ambitious I'm feeling. The
preamp and Lexicon are controlled by a Ground Control pedal that
changes midi patches. Many's the time I've tried to explain to some
drunk guy that he can't just buy the Ground Control pedal and get the
sound I get, but apparently the concept of midi is beyond my powers of
communication to the imbibed. I've used this rig over the last 8 years
or so for anything where I need a variety of tones and a healthy
amount of volume. IMO it sounds great and can adapt to any type of
commercial situation, or a jazz gig that's more on the adventurous and
loud side.

Sometimes I use a TubeWorks Real Tube overdrive and the Dan-Echo and maybe
an old Vox wah or a newish Dunlop wah with the 'Q' knob.
Or I'll use a POD with Floorboard into the power amp in jack on the Bandit,
if it's a gig that needs monster distortion or a lot of quick tone changes.

last night, I'll use one of the ER speakers with the O8 added to juice up
volume and fullness. (BTW, I auditioned a Polytone Mini Brain at last

deadening add -- with a big band. I'll post a more detailed review in a day

What's that tuning again...?
After years of lugging around big Fender amps and pedal boards (which I had
to readjust every time I move them), I flew solo last week on a R&B/Dance
gig - no big amps and only one effects/modeler box - The Digitech RP100. It
worked great.
I split the output (mono not stereo) - one to the PA and one to Deluxe
Reverb as a monitor (could have used a Princeton).
Modeled a Blackface Twin Reverb. Set up the following patches:
- One clean Twin no Reverb
- One clean Twin w/ Reverb
- 4 Choruses (Chorusi?) with increasing effect and reverb
- 4 Tremelos with increasing rate and depth
- 2 Rotary (which I didn't use)
- One Tweed Deluxe mod with a little dirt
- One bright clean country Twin (My Guitar and Cadillacs patch)
- One 'Elvis' patch - Slapback and Reverb
I paid $65 used for the box - downloaded manual from Digitech. In 35 years
of playing, this is the single most impressive piece of equipment I've
owned - at any cost.
Chip L
Guitar
Hard tail Frankenstrat with 2 humbuckers (modified bridge humbucker -
angled with coil closest to the neck offset to compensate for the angle)
and a single coil in the middle. Neck pos has a Duncan 59, middle has a
Duncan SSL-2 Vintage Flat and bridge modified Dimarzio Tone Zone.
5 way:
pos 1 = neck pup, normal humbucking wiring.
pos 2 = neck pup coil closest to neck plus middle pup in parallel.
pos 3 = middle pup.
pos 4 = middle pup plus bridge pup coil closest to the bridge.
pos 5= bridge pup, normal humbucking wiring.
I also have switches that allow me to use either humbucker in single
coil mode all by itself plus a switch that turns the bridge pup on
regardless of the position of the 5 way switch. I also have a switchable
treble bleed circuit consisting of an .002mf cap and a 100k resistor in
parallel that I can switch in and out across the lugs of my volume
control. Pots are 500k audio taper. Tone control uses a .022mf cap.
Strung with D'Addario round wound .011" > .049".
If the gig is 100% R&B I might use another hard tail Frankenstrat with 3
Kinman noiseless Strat pickups. This guitar also has the switchable
treble bleed circuit plus a switch to trun on the bridge pup regardless
of the position of the 5 way.
Amp
Mesa TriAxis through a Simul Satellite (with EVM12L) with TC G Major in
the FX Loop. Depending on the gig, in front of the TriAxis input I use a
VHT Valvulator tube driven buffer into a Vox Wah (with true bypass) into
a rack mounted Boss CL-50 compressor. The Valvulator does a good job of
eliminating capacitance/tone loss due to long cables and impedance
mismatches between effects and the guitar. If no wah is needed I skip
the VHT and the wah and just plug right into the compressor usually.
Plugging directly into the input of the preamp gives the best tone
though. No surprise there.
Straight ahead jazz gigs, jazz rehearsals and jam sessions:
Guitar
Mexi Tele Deluxe with humbucker in neck position. (Today it's a Duncan
59 again - with nickel cover.) Strung with D'Addario Chrome flatwounds
.011" > .050" set but I use an .012" for the high E and an .016" for the
B string.
For a really straight, old style big band gig, ala Freddie Green, I
might use my Samick HJ 650 L5 copy. It's got a Gibson 57 classic in the
neck position and is strung with D'Addario .012" > .050" round wounds.
Amp
Depends on my mood. Either a Polytone MBII or a Mesa MKIV Wide Body
Combo (with Celstion 90 watt spkr) or the Mesa Simul Satellite (sans
TriAxis). No FX.

Forgot to mention that I'm using an ADA MXC MIDI pedal system to change
programs and as a software controlled volume pedal via MIDI CC. One of
the G-Major's effects output volume is controlled by the controller
pedal. The G-Major is in the FX loop of the TriAxis and is post
overdrive so when I back off the volume pedal the amount of tube
overdrive saturation remains the same. I.e. The same amount of
distortion at any volume. Using a digital volume pedal at this point in
the signal chain eliminates any signal degradation problems that would
ensue from running long analog cables into an analog volume pedal.
If I want to reduce the volume and the amount of overdrive at the same
time I just turn down the volume on the guitar. When i do this I can
taper the tone of the top end by switching in or out the treble bleed
circuit as desired.

Murch Music has "lawsuit" Ibanez 175 but with a spruce top (laminate).
It's also got a sort of gaudy looking wooden tail piece.

Interesting guitar.
Unfortunalty, I have never heard the spruce top before so I can only
guess the sound from this guitar will be brighter than the standard maple
top, as spruce is known for. This different material probably will be a
advantage when playing the guitar unplugged, as the sound must be louder.
When you take a closer look at the murchmusic website you will see the
peghead inlay is not exactly shaped as on a gibson es-175, therefore the
shape of the entire headstock will be so called post-lawsuit and not
'open-book' as the 'real' lawsuit models are (check lawsuit section of my
website for more info). Though headstockshape is not much effect on the
guitars tone it this makes the instrument less collectable and not a
lawsuit model. Murchmusic does a good job hiding that.
Neverteless the price Murchmusic is asking seems quite acceptable
compared to what these usually are sold for ($1000/$1200)
The tailpiece looks very cool. But actually I don't think it is made from
wood, it rather looks like steel as on the gibson L-5. Though I wonder
what tone-effect a wooden tailpiece would make... Problably better
acoustic tone and slightly warmer. I love to experiment with that as one
of these days I will replace the (original) rosewood bridge of the my
Ibanez 2355 by a ebony piece.
Btw, there is currently a blond Ibanez es-175 on e-bay

(I stole Joey's category titile here, though in S. Florida, "Jobbing" gigs are
called "club dates," which makes no sense, but that's what they call 'em)
Jobbing and pop/R&B gigs and jazz with a fusion bent:
Frankenstrat; Basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, standard Fender
trem bridge w/graphtech saddles, graphite nut, Sperzel locking tuners.
Pickups; Seymour Duncan JB in bridge, 3 Duncan or Dimarzio (forget which) strat
style single coils; 1 in middle, 2 side by side in neck position. Roland GK2a
& Roland GK1 (the GK1 is velcro mounted and I generally don't keep it on the
guitar unless I'm using it with my GR300) synth pickups
5 position strat switch does the standard settings. 2 toggle switches, one for
bridge pu (for coil splitting) and one for neck ones. I can use either of the
two neck pickups or run them in series so they function like a humbucker. The
sound is a little boomy and muddy in this mode; the dark Hall/Metheny tone is
pretty much not there, but I tried to wean myself off that a few years ago
anyway. Master volume, and two tones, one for neck and one for bridge. Also
there is a push/pull pot on one of the tone knobs to turn on bridge pickup in
any position so I can get the two humbucker sound.
strings; DR Hi Beams, 10 -46 with high E swapped out for a 10.5 or 11
This used to also be my main jazz guitar; for a long time I used the bridge pu
with the tone rolled off. That's what I'm playing on that Green Dolphin St. on
my web site.
Conklin 8 string chambered solid body (regular tuning + high A and low B). Ash
body, maple/purpleheart bolt on neck, rosewood fingerboard. Novax fanned fret
system (scale lengths; 23 5/8" on treble side - 26 1/2" on bass side).
Hardtail strat/tele type bridge w/RMC piezo saddles. 2 Seymour Duncan custom
humbuckers, master volume & tone knobs, push/pull pot for split coils. piezo
tone knob + piezo/mag blend knob. Roland 13 pin synth pickup system (only
functions on 6 highest strings)
strings; D'Addario custom set, 09, 11, 14, 18p, 26, 36, 46, 68
This has for all intents and purposes become my main jazz guitar, for both
straight ahead and more fusion/loud things, even though I'm still kind of a
beginner at playing it, especially that high A (really kicks my ass). I've
also recently found it to be fantastic for a guitar/vocal duo gig I've been
doing.
Godin Multiac nylon, D'Addario Pro Arte "normal tension" strings
still use this for quieter jazz gigs and solo gigs, especially where there is
some mention of "classical guitar" by the agent or client. This guitar can't
cut it in a loud or even medium loud setting, like with a drummer using sticks.
Those are my main gigging guitars; I also have a late '70s ES-335 that used to
be my main jazz guitar. I soured on it's honky midrangy voice when I was going
through my Metheny phase and was trying to get that warm, deep sound you can
only get with a bigger archtop (or somewhat with a solid body). Now I'm really
into that sound again, but I still seldom play it because A) it's only got 6
strings, and B) the string spacing is too narrow for me at the bridge now that
I play mostly fingerstyle. I also have a Roland/Ibanez guitar that's the
controller for the GR300, but I have the same issues with it as with the ES335.
Rack system (for use on pretty much all gigs except very quiet ones or where
it's important to be portable and/or keep it simple);
Roland GP100 preamp/multi-effects unit
Alesis Quadraverb (used only for the synth)
Samson line mixer
QSC mx700 power amp (about 150 watts per side at 8 ohms)
Mesa/Boogie closed back 1x12 cab w/EV 12L
optional - RE Stealth12ER for use with nylon string, or as second cab for
stereo rig
Boss GT-3 preamp/multieffects floor pedal
used with above rig as a midi controller, or on it's own with power amp/cab,
direct into board for recording, or with combo below for at home practice,
recording, and small gigs;
Pearce 1x12 open back cab w/2 space rack; Samson servo 120 (60 watts bridged at
8 ohms). The speaker in the cab is the one from my old Fender London Reverb
('80s solid state combo), which finally bit it a year or so ago.
Crate Acoustic amp; used for solo gigs and some at home practice (I keep it in
the living room for when I want to noodle and watch TV)
I used to use a lot of effects pedals but these days about the only things I
use are a Boomerang phrase sampler for more "out" gigs, and a Danelectro
Danowah if I need a wah pedal for pop type gigs. I recently used it for a
Hendrix-esque Star Spangled Banner at a 4th of July gig, and it worked great.

Me neither, but it's nice to find out what other folks use.

mainly use the Zeidler and Dragony with the Clarus and RE Cab

Mine's a 'work-in-progress' rack, but so far it's a Steinberger Spirit
GU Deluxe with GK-2A pickup, analogue side into a Dano Chilli-Dog
octave pedal, a split output into a DG-Stomp and a V-amp into a Samson
PL1602 mixer (2U rack 8 stereo inputs) DG mixed stereo right+centre
V-amp mixed stereo left+centre. GK-2A into GR33 synth into Roland
VP-9000 sampler, both into PL1602, GR33 mixed stereo L+C, VP-9000 R+C.
Mixer into 15 band stereo graphic EQ, into Matrix Vector 350 170+170w
mosfet power amp, into two 2x10 cabs with Eminence PA and subwoofer
speakers + HF tweeters.
FX send 1 from the PL1602 into a Zoom 1201 mainly for ring mod FX. FX
send 2 into a Boss RC20 Loop sampler.

Patch control on the DG,V-amp, GR33 and VP-9000 by a Behringer FCB1010
midi floor pedal into a midiman 1x4 splitter, with a Midi Solutions
Quadramerge and Forefront FT4 midi filter to combine the FCB1010 patch
data with GR33 pitch data (inc pitchbend filter) into the VP-9000.
The FCB1010 exp pedal 1 controls the GR33 exp pedal, and exp pedal 2
controls the DG-Stomp wah.
There will probably be a further footswitch box to route the
Chilli-Dog separately into the DG, V-amp or clean, ditto to switch the
DG, V-amp, GR33 and VP-9000 from the offset stereo, to centre stage
(LR stereo) or full L or R.

Well it's pretty versatile but the straight ahead jazz tone of my

It's real good because it's simple and doesn't try to do everything all
at once. Almost everything it is supposed to do it does. I had one
niggle that took me for a loop but I found a completely satisfactory
workaround. I posted about it either here or at rec.music.makers.guitar.
Try a Google search.

Say, I have a Sakurai No. 5, bought new in 1976. They do have a lovely tone.
No backbow or rattle, but mine has a slight top split running next to the
fingerboard; I was advised to let it be, since it posed no structural problems.
The bridge popped off once and was reglued. (Can you tell I used to live in a
super dry apartment without knowldege of proper humidification at the time?).
But it sounds great, and mine has the loveliest Brazilian I've ever seen. When
I bought in '76, I was told that the embargoes were just beginning to take
effect and that this would be one of the last new Brazilian guitars anywhere.
Amazing how much Brazilian seems to turn up every year since then, eh?

Yeah, me. <g>
I just got addicted to the *push one button any everything changes*
mentality many years ago when they first came out with the ADA MP1 MIDI
preamp. You can never go home again. I've also been addicted to this
idea of having one guitar that will give me all of the Gibson and Fender
sounds. I've convinced myself that I need that kind of versatility on
jobbing gigs and R&B stuff. I do enjoy the pallette but sometimes I get
too caught up in dialing the sound just right and by then the tune is over.
It's a pretty simple set up until I add the wah wah, and then my tone
jones sets in and when I need to use some longish cables I then need to
use the VHT buffer and to keep the signal pure sounding. But i'm on a
bit of a wah wah kick right now.
Other than that, I just plug in 4 cables and go. Guitar to preamp,
preamp to power amp, plus a MIDI cable from the preamp to the MIDI pedal
and one cable connecting from the MIDI pedal to the CC pedal. I'm always
packed up now way ahead of the drummer and the keyboard player. But
those bass players and horn players are long gone by the time I bring my
car around.

interesting thread, here's my list:
Guitars: Guild X-700 stuart, Guild Mark 2 classical
Amplification: Little Lanilei spring reverb into original clarus and then RE
stealth 12. I have an audio technica clip on mic i've recently been using in
the sound hole to amplify the classic guitar, although for a long time I have
used the Schatten stick on transducer.
For Pit orchestra work that requires effects, etc... I use a Boss GT-3.

Yeah. Mario's a real nice guy. I've been meaning to buy one of his

Stop listing equipment, guys! I'm supposed to be working!
My Guitars (a lot like Lawson Stone)!:
1. Heritage custom Eagle (spruce top, retrofitted with with Gibson
PAF57 humbucker and tone control), strung with Tomastik, LaBella, or
D'Addario 12-52 flats (I go through phases)
2. Epi Sheraton II, strung with 11's (LaBella 11-52 flats, with 12
replacing the 11, or D'Addario 11-49 rounds with wound G)
Amps:
1. Evans JE120 for most gigs
2. Evans AE100 for practice, small gigs sometimes.
Picks:
1. Fender white (color makes a difference to the texture and the
sound) large teardrop extra-heavy
2. Fender tortoise small teardrop heavy
3. Herco jazz 3
4. D'Andrea extra-heavy small teardrop
Pedals:
1. Maxon compressor into
2. Fulltone FatBoost into either 3 or 4 below
3. EQ (either MXR 109 or CM semi-parametric) or
4. DOD FX96 echo
Other stuff:
1. Boss DR5 Rhythm Machine
2. Boss JamStation
3. Johnson J-station
4. Other misc pedals and recording equipment - need to sell some,
since I rarely use anything except the above equipment)
Lawren.
Fender classical guitar, Suzuki steel-string acoustic - neither of these are
much good really but I've had them since I was a teenager - never got round
to replacing them.
Amp: Fender Twin (odd variant with a single 15" speaker) - can't move it
these days without giving myself a hernia, so looking for a replacement.
Also I have an ancient Windsor 5-string banjo which I got from a relative -
occasionally I get it out and pluck a few notes for a complete change from
the guitar (but I've never really mastered it).
Oh - and a Hohner Marine Band harmonica which is great for wailing the blues
(haven't really mastered that either!)

I'm going for scalable rigs, from the simple to the complex depending
on where, how much time, how big a room, how varied a repertoire etc.
I tend to rotate the guitars, but major in single coils and minor in
humbuckers. If you find the ideal Fender/Gibson crossbreed let me
know.

Was that the tuner/volume pedal thing? I don't remember seeing your
