From an interview (3/6/2006) with a composer I'm crazy about, Ivan Lins:

Ivan Lins: "It was (then Warner Brothers president) Tommy LiPuma..
Tommy sent to Miles all my stuff, because Miles was looking for
different music and he sent my music. Tommy is a great fan of my music
too. I met Tommy a long time ago through Quincy Jones when we were
working at Warner Brothers. Tommy sent my stuff to Miles and two days
after, Miles called Tommy and said 'I need to talk to this man. You
sent me incredible music. I want to talk to this Ivan Lins. How can I
talk to him?' Tommy contacted Stewart Levine, who was my producer, and
he contacted me and said 'Ivan, Miles wants to talk to you. He's in
love with your music, but he wants to talk personally.' I got scared.
(laughs) The funny story is I asked a friend to listen to me talking,
because I don't speak good English and I was afraid of the slang. The
Miles Davis slang. I was afraid I wasn't going to understand what he
was saying, so maybe I was going to need translation.

"So I asked a friend to listen to the conversation. And it was really
funny, because it was really fast and he went directly to the point. He
said, (in a Miles Davis gravelly voice) 'oh man, your music is
excellent. I love your music, man. I listening to your cd's and the
songs are really great, but too many notes man, too many notes in the
arrangements.' He told me (in MD's voice again) 'I'm going to record 28
songs.' (laughs) I'm thinking 'wow, 28 songs.' One month later, Jason
Miles, who was Miles' programmer, one month later, he confirmed. He
called me and said, 'oh, Ivan, I'm Jason Miles. I met you in Los
Angeles in Larry Williams' house. I don't know if you remember me, but
I'm working with Miles and he wants to record 28 songs and I want to
just say I'm a fan of your music. ' Three months later (September,
1991), Miles died."

Semi-related:

Hermeto Pascoal recorded with Miles and Miles recorded some of Hermeto's tune.

He was a big Hermeto fan, I've heard. I bought a number of Hermeto's
sides and I never did get it. Were the Davis sides released?

Live Evil (never heard it, found it on the Internet).

I also have some Hermeto albums that I didn't get into.

But, he has some tunes I love, Meninha Ilza, Pipoco, and some I can't think of right now.

There's youtube video of him with Elis Regina playing Asa Branca and Girl From Ipanema. Wildest reharmonization I ever heard.

And, pretty much unrelated to this thread, Elis and Tom, Aguas De Marco, my favorite youtube music video.

Wow. Two incredibly charismatic and talented people with great rapport bouncing off each other.

Not getting it is pretty common. Only solution is to catch the loco albino dwarf live and in person. (Much like the great beauty and radiant love of Roland Kirk) Then you'll get it - guaranteed. Tho you still might not get off on the records.

I caught his show a few years ago in San Francisco.

He was amazing, but the highlight of the show was his backup band playing using only what looked like big cardboard mailing tubes of different lengths. Banging them on the stage to make sound, including harmony.

Reminds me of some of the innovative instruments used by Uakti.

He makes music with anything and everything shaken up with constant imagination and innovation. One time I saw him was something similar to cardboard tubes, in a way - the guys lines up at the front with lidded saucepans containing a handful of dried peas and played a very neat interlocking percussion piece.

The man is a huge laugh. Doesn't speak English. I don't speak Portugeezer either. But our struggle to communicate was such endlessly playful FUN. Guys in the band honestly think he's crazy, and they love him. The vibe around him when he is stirring up sounds is absolutely captivating. The Sorcerer.

This segment of film illustrates his magic ingredient of joyousness

My favorite Joe Pass album is Tudo Bem! I particularly like his double time feel version of Wave.
