Has anyone any opinions on this guitar? I'll be frank - it appeals to
me because it's pretty, and only shallow people don't judge things by
appearances. But if it doesn't sound good, then .. uh ....

I have had to be diligent. Anyone with equal diligence would have done as much.

If it's a bowlback, don't plan on a growing a beergut.

I have one. Acoustically, it sounds terrible - thin and plasticky.
Plugged in, using the stock p/u and preamp it sounds fantastic - no
kidding. Has a very full sound without much piezo quack.

What's the body size? No specs on the Ovation website.

Mine is the shallow bowl. Not sure if all CS257's have a shallow bowl
or not. It measures 15.5" across the widest part of the lower bout.
It measures 12-5/8" from nut to 12th fret with a 1-11-16" nut width. I
have mine string with medium gauge (13-56) phospher bronze strings. I
find light gauge strings make for an even thinner sound with this
guitar.

My main acoustic is a Taylor 912C (1995) with a Fishman Natural I piezo
pickup. I also once had a 712CE with a Fishman Prefix Blend.
Acoustically, there is no comparison. The Taylor to my ears is far
superior and the 912C is my all time favorite axe.

Ironically, the Ovation sounds incredibly better than my Taylors,
plugged in. I receive many more comments on the sound of my guitar
when playing the Ovation; comments from folks who are not guitarists
just commenting on how big and warm and acoustic the sound is.

One day I'll find a nice pickup system for the 912C but until then the
Ovation wins hands down.

P.S. I bought the CS257 as a guitar I could use on camping trips and
in situations where I didn't want to risk damaging my Taylor. The
plastic bowl is indestructable. I never figured it would become such a
nice sounding work horse.
