I read an interview back in the early 70's, either in Downbeat
or Guitar Player. Joe Pass was raving about John McLaughlin
and Mahavishnu orchestra. He said it made him want to get
a Marshal and Les Paul and play like that. Anyone else here
remember that interview?

I think I have read most of what has been published about Joe but I do
not recall this at all. I certainly could see Joe being positive about
Mclaughlin but the Les Paul and the Marshal seems a stretch.

I know I didn't imagine it, I rubbed the article in the face of
a guitarist friend who said McLaughlin wasn't really any good.
He was a big Joe Pass fan, he said McLaughlin was pretentious,
with no real abilty. I took particular glee in reading him Pass's
words.

My friend was one of those anal-retentive control freak
guitar nerd types. He even criticized the way I carried
my guitar case, he said that wasn't the right way to do it,
demontrating the proper technique, walking prim and proper
like the SNL Church Lady.

He didn't say he was going to start playing that way, he loved the
sound and wondered what he would sound like playing that way.

Joe Pass expressed great admiration for Allan Holdsworth too. He at
least once asked a group of youngsters armed with jazz boxes how many
of them had heard of Allan Holdsworth. And that they should be
copying what he is doing rather than guys from his generation.

Well there's 'blindfold test' type interview somewhere in which he was
pretty harsh about Jimi Hendrix.

He didn't like a particular record, which was from one of those bad
posthumous albums (most of which were dreadful). Not one of Jimi's
best, and not from his known albums. Once Pass found out it was
Hendrix he said that Hendrix was more known for a combination of
singing and guitar and that he didn't think this cut was
representative of him.

I remember that Downbeat blindfold test...he seemed to be hearing Jimi
Hendrix for the first time and really dissed him..especially the sound
of the guitar. I cant imagine him going for Maha at all. I was also a
regular subsciber back then of GP and DB and some others...i would
have remembered Pass saying anything about JM (who was one of my favs
at the time).
If you find it, please post the link!!

I have the Down Beat article, and I think Joe was rather tough on
Grant Green, too. I'll check when I get home.

I remember the guy doing the test seemed to be trying to shock Joe.
That was the Downbeat MO for blindfold tests back then. The Hendrix
cut was a pretty crappy cut from an LP like Midnight Lightning as I
recall.

I remember when they played something from Inner Mounting Flame back
then for Benson and he said he thought it was Allan Holdsworth.
