I just picked up an AER Alpha amplifier at Dreamcatcher Guitars in Georgia
while I was up there. I didn't need it (I have so many amplifiers I don't
use) but I couldn't believe how great this thing was, so I bought it in case
an application arises that I may need it. I've been using a bf princeton
reverb with an extension cab for most gigs and I just got an evans head to
use with a 15" cabinet that is going to replace the princeton as a gigging
rig. I'm very happy with the evans, it's loud, clean and funky too- really
sounds like a tube amp. But... back to the AER... I could not believe how
big this little amp sounds. The amp has a little carry bag with a shoulder
strap and weighs next to nothing. It has a mic input and a line input, 3
band eq and a digital reverb. I hate digital reverb, but this sounds ok and
the amp is very quiet. No hiss. It is very LOUD when you turn it up and
stays clean- does not sound like a little amp, nor does it sound like an
"acoustic" amp. It just sounds like an amplifier. A very small, clean and
loud amplifier. I haven't used it with a band yet- I imagine I'll probably
bring it on drummerless gigs and solo guitar gigs for the portability thing.
I get the impression it would handle most jazz drummers pretty well though,
believe it or not. It has an xlr output for a pa too, if you're into that
sort of thing. The biggest thing that impresses me about it is that when I
play through it, I don't feel like I'm compromising anything in terms of
tone- I'm completely happy with the sound of it. At a price point of just
over $700, it is in my book serious competition for a polytone megabrute as
I think it sounds a thousand times better. I went into the store without a
need for any new amps or anything and i was so impressed with this thing I
had to have it. Anyway, dreamcatcher's web address is www.gtrs4u.com and
Eddie (the owner) is a very nice fellow. I'm having fun with this thing.

Ah, a man after my own heart. You just never know what might come up, so
being prepared is essential - and fun :)-

Nate,

I hadn't heared of this amp until a recent solo gig by Jack Wilkins
that I described here a few weeks ago when Mark Kleinhaut was visiting
NY, and like you, I couldn't believe how great this amp sounded.
Especially, after hearing Jack play a week later with the same guitar
but with his Clarus/RE rig, the AER sound was so much sweeter and
jazzy...

I heard Jimmy Bruno use his 7-string Benedetto through an AER amp with
an AER extension cab a few months ago. It sounded great and held its
own with a drummer, bass and sax.

Dan, I agree that Jack sounded great that night with the AER. My own experince
with this amp was when I played in Germany/Holland for a week last fall and
Dave Moss lent me his amp for the tour. The amp sounded great in Dave's
livingroom, but I've got to tell you, I struggled with my sound the entire
tour and NEVER felt like it really worked for me. One night I played at
Birdland55 and I went through their PA (in addition to the AER) and at the
Crow I used ######'s polytone, and those gigs were both way better than the
AER alone. Frankly, I don't think that amp cuts the mustard for anything
more than a solo gig.

I have two, I think they are great. I used one on the second Penguin
Jazz CD. You can hear the tracks on my soundclick page
The tracks Swing Street, Mile Lays, and Midnight are all on the AER

Mark,

I figured it might not cut it for a full band, but I havne't had a chance to
test it. Actually I don't want to test it and then find it it's no good for
that and be stuck on the gig! Seriously though, those are good
observations, so we'll rule out using it with a full band and stick to
"convenience gigs" like small things with duo or drummerless trio.

Couldn't you have put it through the PA on all your gigs?

Only if the place had one. We played different rooms every night and the
small places had nothing.

Good music, Pat! Thanks!

I may have to look into an AER!

Nice sweet sound Pat! Which AER models do you have? Are they both the same? If
not, can you describe the differences and your personal preference.

Thanks,
Perry

I have a Tramp and a Compact 60. Same amp, but the Tramp has a 3 hour
battery pack. I use the Compact 60 always as it is like carrying a lunch
box. That said I mostly use my Carr amps now, I still like tubes best
for electric guitar. I still use the AER for my Gibson Chet nylon.

Right. Were those rooms small enough for the AER to be sufficient? The
reason I ask is that I use a 30w valve amp and have had to mike it on the
couple of occasions I've played at larger venues, and not having done much
playing yet in public I'm wondering what the situation out there in the
real world is.
