Last night, I saw Earl Klugh at the Ramshead Tavern, and what a surprise.
When you think of EK you think of smooth jazz, strings, sugar,
sweet....Well, I must say that's not what we got in person. This band of his
was extremely talented, versatile, and skillful. In a word, they were
smokin'. Can you imagine more than one standing O at an EK concert with the
audience just about dancing in their seats? The sax player, Lenny Price was
dynamic. The drummer was outstanding.

Earl was as usual clean and sharp, but very giving in the sense that he
allowed his badmates plenty of room to shine within the confines of his
arrangements. That's not accurate - actually, they were allowed to move far
outside of the confines of his arrangements, as long they tehy eventually
returned to terra firma. EK was having a ball watching these guys stretch
out his tunes.

He says there is a new CD coming out in a year, I hope we hear more of what
we heard last night.

After the show, he took a seat in the lobby and signed autographs, chatting
with everyone.

Very pleasant.

That's really cool to hear. I really haven't heard much of Klugh, except
warnings away from his smooth jazz. But I must say, I for one find his
Solo Guitar recording exceptional, and it doesn't surprise me in the
least to hear that maybe, you know, he knows where the bread comes from
but what you witnessed last night is more along the lines of what he
really wants to do...?

Yeah, I mean he told us that he was playing a selection from his last CD and
we listened and it was great...then we bought the cd and it was
different...not as dynamic.

It will be interesting to hear what comes next.

sounds like a great show! unfortunately, I have found that while a lot
of the more "commercial" cats can really play out live, I've been
disappointed in their cds.

When I was in college, a long time ago I took a course from flute/reed player
Robert Northern (later became Brother Ah) but any way, he was a sessions man on
the jazz scene in the bebop years.

In lean times, he sat in a few musak gigs.He said that the band would hit a
groove on a song and it would really cook, then the producer would come in and
say, "That was great but a little TOO MUCH, we need you to tone it down." Then
they played it again "with [out] feeling"

Maybe that's what happens in the studis today.

Peace.

I saw his show in San Juan, P. R. a few months ago, and it was great. I
wish they come back soon.

I had the pleasure to share the stage with Earl last April, in
Atlanta, at the National Academy of Recording Arts. He is a good
player away from the smooth thing, as well. And a real gentleman too
(we have photos together posted on my site. The event was hosted by
Steve Vai and his trusty classical side-kick, Sharon Isbin. Earl and I
felt like fishes out of water, indeed.
