Just read on RMB that pianist Mal Waldron has passed. I quote:

I first heard Mal on the Prestige sides of Eric Dolphy. For those
unfamiliar with his playing, he followed a method of exploring a motif
from every conceivable angle. He was particularly inclined to take a
rhythmic element and "run the voodoo down". His approach changed very
little in the last 40 years -- he just got better. Although he spent
most of his time in Europe(and I don't) I was lucky to catch him playing
in duet with Steve Lacy at a festival a couple of years back. These guys
were such a contrast to the other performers: two unassuming senior
citizens working their very personal minimalist techniques. Delicate,
daring, profound.

That's a shame. Mal was quite a composer and a fine pianist. His work with
Mingus will always be remembered with great fondness. He will be missed.
