I bought a Crate Limo about a month ago and it has become my favorite
practice and jamming amp.

I have been jamming with bass, sax and drums in whoever's living
room. It has plenty of volume for these cases. I have charged it up
before the jam, and have played two hours without problems. (It is
supposed to work 4-8 hours on one charge.)

I like the sound. I have been mostly using my Yamaha AEX1500 with the
tone rolled off to about 3 and the amp set flat. I'm not crazy about
the reverb choices, but it is close enough that I have not been using
my Nanoverb pedal. The amp has a tweeter, which gives it some nice
highs for fingerstyle playing.

I would take my Clarus 2R and Ear Candy cabinet to a gig (if I ever
get one again), but prefer the Crate for practice and the jam
sessions. I LIKE THIS THING!

I nearly bought one after hearing Phil DeGruy play through one at a
restaurant gig. No hassle searching for a plug (I've actaully climbed
under patrons' tables to power up) and Phil sounded just like...Phil
through the amp (the model might have been called a Taxi). I didn't
buy it because I found it to be a little heavy (battery...duh!) and
sterile sounding. Pretty good amp for the money, though. I'll bet a
piezo/mag guitar *would* sound good through it.

I'm becoming a fan of battery amps too. I never tried the Crate but I
have an ElectroHarmonix Freedom battery amp that I like a lot. I used
it on a solo gig last week and it worked very well with my Heritage
archtop and Godin classical. I plan to use it on another solo gig
this Saturday at the same place. Really convenient. The EH amp
charge is supposed to last 4 hrs and did fine on a 3 hr gig. It has
no effects and only three knobs: volume, tone and "bite" (I set that
to 0). It's surprisingly powerful -- I set the volume on about 3 for
my gig. The only downside is that the EH amp has a fancy pine cabinet
that is subject to damage during transport to and from gigs.

I have no idea why Crate discontinued those 50W Limo amps.
I wanted to buy buttery amp recently to use for for jamming
with acoustic players and I ended up buying VOX DA5. It is
fairly loud for 5W and OK for playing with couple acoustic
instruments but having 50W battery amp would be great -
I could take it to drum circles - there is one here in
Austin every full moon - in front of belly dancing studio.
Most of the time people there play Arabic rhythms and girls
from the studio dance and do fire twirling. REALLY nice.

I did too. About a month ago I bought it. And about a week from now it
will (purportedly) deliver. Actualy I got the Taxi instead, the 30
watt model. There was a substantial weight difference and immediacy
and portability was what I was really looking for. Playing on patios.
Any patio anywhere. Probably solo or duo with a horn.

I thought the Limo WAS a 50w? About a year ago I was chasing one down
and it seemed discontinued on all the web-sites. I called somebody that
told me that were not discontinued but they had had a major disconnect
in production that would last a few months.

But I don't know what the status is right now. I got a Taxi but the OP
got a Limo.

Where did you get it?
Musician Friend only carries 15W version.

My 30w Taxi arrived a couple of hours ago and is charging up. I got it
through world music supply ( www.worldmusicsupply.com ) in Indiana. I
ordered it close to a month ago and they shipped last monday.
Admittedly I didn't check to see if it was in stock.

An Albuquerque store, "Grandma's" had two in stock. Yes, it's the 50
Watt version.

BTW, there were more than one version of the Limo. The one I bought
has a wood (probably partical board) cabinet. I had another version
with a plastic cabinet and I sent it back 'cos it had a bad buzz in it
at relatively low volumes.

I understand that Mackie has bought Crate and the combined company
will have a different name. I wonder if this has something to do with
discontinuing the Limo. I also wonder what will happen if it craps
out.

I love mine. It also makes a great mini PA system for duo gigs w/
singers.

Plus - I've played bass thru it a few times w/ acoustic groups in
concerts where I only needed it for my stage monitor. It developed a
mechinical buzz while playing bass though... Sounded great until the
buzz arrived!
