Unbelievable guitarist. Just a wonderful performance.

She really makes you want to re-think your entire approach to the
instrument.

Only a few guitar players have ever had that effect on me.

Jimi Hendrix, Frank Gambale, Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Allan Holdsworth,
Shawn Lane, Victor Wooten....

I agree she's great anda real originanl. But it looks like you've

I've only heard some brief clips. Sounds very Michael Hedges-ish to me.
But clips are nothing like the real thing (ie. live performance). What
about her playing did you find so radical?

Well, that's the problem. I keep re-thinking my approach but not really
doing anything about it! :-)

She plays with two handed tapping (sort of like Stanley Jordan) with a lot
of percussive effects on your standard, run of the mill Ovation. She gets
such a strong, percussive sound out of her playing with a technique, that
for me anyways, always yeilded a somewhat weak attack.

So Jack, how was her time? I remember hearing her a year or so ago and she
sounded a litte unsteady in tempo. I felt like that was the only thing
holding her back from really becoming the monster player you're describing,
so I'm guessing she's gotten better since I last heard her.

Not to take anything away from Kaki,

He really pioneered this approach,
which was originally hinted at by Hedges...
I have a DVD where Preston plays a

I believe Kaki studied with him....

She mentioned Reed on the NPR show I heard her on.

I heard a guy playing like that before, arounf 1994-5
he and I played the same places in Litchfield Co. Connecticut, I
can't remember his name, Bruce something I think. He was
very good at it, he had been playing that style for years.
After Hedges came out and the Windham Hill
players were popular, there were others who started playing that
style. Another one I heard was Billy McLaughlin.

I certainly respect her abilities, her but I have to say that her music
doesn't do anything for me. While her technique is great the clips I
have heard of her just don't do it for me musically. I think what it is
is that they don't seem to go anywhere and after the first 30 seconds I
find myself getting bored.
Be interesting to she how she develops over the coming years to see what
she can add in a musical sense to her already impressive technique.

I thought her musical sense was just fine, particularly for such a young
player. She certainly doesn't have the harmonic concept of Ben Monder or
Kurt Rosenwinkel but I think she's got a pretty good start. There aren't too
many players that could hold my interest for a 2 hour solo guitar concert
even among the "heavy-hitters" out there.

I think that may be what I find causes me to lose interest - the lack of
harmonic motion. It's an easy trap to fall into on an acoustic guitar
with open tunings.
Don't get me wrong, I think she is someone to watch out for, but I think
her technique is far ahead of her harmonic and melodic conception at
this point.

To each his own.

However, In this day and age when music seems to be heading down the
path towards becoming a happy meal, what a refreshing thing to hear a
young female artist that doesn't feel the need to look like a porn-star
and to actually make the music the central focus of her performance.

Different strokes for different folks.

Just watched the video. I found nothing sexual in her video at all.
Yeah she was wearing makeup but so what?!? You don't put on a suit and
tie for a gig? Her performance was no more sexual than Wynton putting
on a fitted suit for a gig. She's just wearing standard college-wear. I
don't get this undulating, oogling comments.

Miles Davis undulated and oogled 10x more in his performances.

I haven't read all the posts in this thread but no one seems to have
mentioned Danny Heines. He's been doing this stuff for many years. From
what I see of Kaki King, she seems to have taken a page from his book
although her music seems not as involved.

I took lessons from Danny (he's a great straight ahead player) and saw him
play live a couple of times and he is amazing to watch. Unfortunately, his
web site doesn't really highlight his more technically demanding stuff. I
have his Vanishing Borders CD and some pieces are simply astounding - you
won't believe that there's no overdubbing.

Technically known as a DerDer, because when you were a kid you went
about with it going Der. Der.

>similar device used to burn last embers of the butt"

Nah. The lies they put on the web. I tell ya. You take your heretofore
referencd DerDer. You poke a hole about 1" from one end about an 1/8th
of an inch in diameter. You then roll a long mushroom shaped joint -
it took about 8 papers and used about an eighth of an ounce of reefer
potweed. You place the base of the constructed joint in the hole you
punched. Place one end of DerDer to mouth. Place palm of hand over
other end of DerDer so no air can enter. Fire up joint. Inhale
strongly, then, still inhaling, remove hand from other end of DerDer.
A ruch of cool air will force an enormous amount of cannabis saturated
smoke down your little druggie lungs, and you will be thoroughly zoned
in about 10 seconds flat.

Depiction of Steamboat Joint:

except that it's about twice this size.

To burn the "last embers of the butt" [sic - it's a freakin' roach]
the average unthinking pothead uses a pair of tweezers. Sap. You'll
drop the roach. Far superior is a pair of medical forceps.

And people think that being a stoner was easy. It took a lot of work
and forethought to do it properly. And then ParentingTeens.com [aka,
jack-booted stormtroopers] publish lies, outright slander. And for
this I pay taxes ...........

Speaking of roach clips...

The most mellow concert vibe I ever experienced was a Joni Mitchell concert
at the College of William and Mary, roundabouts '73, '74 or so. (yeah, I'm
that old) Tom Scott's band opened the show and backed Joni who did two full
sets, the first completely solo, the second with Scott's LA Express backing
her (this was the Court n Spark era). You could clip your roach clip onto a
passing doobie wondering if you'd ever see it again. 15 minutes later it
would come back by with a fresh joint attached. Everyone was on the same
side that night. Not sure it's happened since.
