thanks for that, because that was really fun!
Andreas is easily the best bop guitarist in the world, imo. His
phrasing is just incredible - up there with the top bop players of the
50's. And that's not the only style he's fluent in. Considering his
mind-boggling technique and stylistic versatility, one could say he's
the next Bireli Lagrene. The guy is just too good. Too damn perfect. I
can see why Bruno got so upset in that video.
Why did Jimmy get upset? And if he got upset, how do you presume what
the reason was?

Thanks Patricia - looking forward to seeing more.

Now that guy is upset that you weren't upset.
You really know how to piss people off !
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too many notes! Just kidding. Too much talk! Still kidding.
Where is the world ranking list of bebop guitaists..?
What´s bebop or gipsy...
...I have to google that.
-Michael
I reckon Birelli is about 47 and probably not planning to exit just
yet. On that basis Andreas might have a month or two to wait!!!

By the way, Jimmy certainly looked as tho' he was far too absorbed to
be upset and exactly what would he be upset about?!! Surely it's a
matter of creative differences/backgrounds/emphasis not Formula 1
rankings.
Then it's good that you clarify this, because the video is edited in
such a way that gives the strong impression that there was a fierce
rivalry and bitterness going on between you.
01:46: "The people don't think that he's the real thing...."
01:26: "...try to play with two guitars that just don't turn out
great..."
01:32: you leave the room to go smoking and drink coffee, looking very
upset (to me, at least)
There's no such thing as a world ranking list in music. Did you notice
the three little letters I appended to the end of my sentence - "imo".
This stands for "in my opinion". This page might help you further:

hmm, sometimes "too damn perfect" is exactly that. I've heard a lot of
Andreas' playing, and none of my initial wowness has worn off. But for
me personally that wowness was all coming from the guitarist inside of
me, not the creative side, and I've never really been moved much at
all emotionally by what I've heard him do, nor has he ever piqued my
interest as someone making music particular to him. To me, and this is
just my opinion based on my biases and whatnot, Jimmy has a lot, lot
more in the 'what makes this guy an individual and interesting to me'
department as a player. Andreas is still a young guy too, and he
always seems to be learning and developing, so who knows what he'll do
in 5 or 10 years.......but while too damn perfect will probably always
get my intention, it'll never really get the proverbial 'job done', if
you know what i mean. Again, YMMV.
Sorry, I do not see that or agree with that at all.
-TD
If you think you are going to bait me into a discussion with you, you
are wrong. Andreas is a fine guitarist and was a lot of fun to play
with. What you see is two guys meeting for the first time with no
rehearsal etc. You are seeing part of the rehearsal.
I have nothing to prove . I stand on my recorded output

the video clearly gave the impression of rivalry and a tense atmosphere.
watch the youtube version and you'll see what the poster means.
I would never get involved with anything like that.

well, obviously it *is* the market angle chosen for this youtube video.
some sort of jazz guitar high noon. philly street vs. royal conservatory. i
kinda liked it ;)
http://www.swingmusic.net/Swing_Music_Chick_Webb_Cuts_Count_Basie.html
Rivalry is part of the jazz tradition. Think of the big band battles
of the 30's, the sax battles of the 40's (Dexter Gordon vs Wardell
Gray is a legendary one), Bud Powell's notorious rivalry with Bird,
Sonny Stitt vs Sonny Rollins on "Sonny Side Up", etc. Whether one
admits it openly or not, this has always been a very competitive music.
I also had the same impression that it was being marketed as some kind
of "High Noon" thing, which I found puzzling, as I have never seen or
heard anything from Mr. Bruno to indicate any selfishness or
insecurity as the video tries to imply. I have not had much
involvement with Mr. Oberg, but maybe you should mention to the
producers that that kind of spin is unnecessary and counterproductive?
The playing is fantastic, but the marketing is a bit off-putting to me.
Those guys all got along personally. They were just driving each
other to new heights. Stitt and Rollins were not rivals.
More importantly, who is the "pound for pound" champion.
If he's the "next Bireli," that means Bireli is the best, since Bireli
is not only still active, but continuing to improve every year.
Saying Bireli is the "best" is easier to justify than Andreas, as
great as AO is. But it's stupid to rank these guys anyway.
Obviously these top guys are all amazing and it's really just a matter
of whose style you like to listen to more.
Patricia
Thanks for clarifying. I didn't get the impression that Jimmy was
annoyed. And I've never seen Jimmy as anything less than respectful
and professional in any situation. The striking thing is that even
AFTER Jimmy offered his comments and clarification, the misperception
is perpetuated, which can lead one to believe that there is some
intentional instigation ("pot stirring"). We're LUCKY to have
musicians of Jimmy's caliper visit and offer to share here. Stop it.
What, he can't be taken at his word? AO rips right along with Jimmy
and I bet they both had a great time. I wish I could hang with either
of them musically.
With all due respect -- you cannot compare one great artist to
another.
No one cuts Bruno - no one cuts Lagrene, no one cut Farlow or Pass,
etc. Need I go on?
These guys are all in a league of their own. Why cant we just enjoy
what they have to offer and be very , very grateful - without this "
he's better than him" B.S.
Jess
You're right man. Both are great guitarists. My post was more like a
spontaneous ode to Andreas than an attempt to put down Jimmy.
At 1:40 the producer says:
"...clearly, we put them together...who's going to be the top
dog?...It's an interesting and puzzling question."
Based on remarks like that it's hard not to get the impression this
was being marketed at least in part as a competitive shoot out type of
event. And that's fine. If that's what you want to do then go for it.
But it's unusual to post a video that contains remarks that are mildly
abrasive, somewhat confrontational, and clearly competitive, and then
say that's not what you meant to do.
Best of all, he's freaking humble.
Thanks!
My ear was also caught by the producer's comment, "who's going to be
the top dog?...It's an interesting and puzzling question." But it was
clear from the body language and smiles on the player's faces that
there was no rivalry, that on the contrary they were enjoying playing
together. I just dismissed the whole comment as something clipped out
of context, etc. Still, that kind of comment muddies the waters. For
me it ran counter to what I saw with my own eyes going on between the
players when they were jamming, so I ignored it. The bigger picture -
those guys were hittin' it!
