I can't find any reviews of Gibson's mini-humbucker pickups...anyone
care to offer opinions? How would they compare to, say, the '57
Classics? (I've got a pair of the '57's already, which I like...)

A little more high end. A little less mids.

The minis are more treble sounding.

Hrm...that could be debated...I held up a humbucker mounting ring next
to my P-90 equipped guitar, just out of curiosity - and the P-90 is
actually a tad bit wider. Narrower of course, from top to bottom, but
longer side to side.

So if you calculated the surface area in square inche...aww, never
mind :P

www.seymourduncan.com has soundbites of mini-humbuckers (theirs of course)
but the antiquity series is pretty close.
I'm a big Deluxe fan as the name implies.

Hi:

I have the Epi Sheraton Elite which has these mini's on them. They are
higher in the range - more treble, but it's nothing that you can't control
with the amp. On the whole, they are very cool because of their range. They
have a big sound for mini-humbuckers. It is different and gives you a
different bucket of toys to play with - not like a 335, but similar. As you
know, they are a remake of the one's on that famous Les Paul...so the sounds
can go from Les Paul to 335 with a little amp fiddlin'...Guitar Player gave
the Epi Sheraton it's highest rating. It has become my favorite guitar.

Hi. In the mid or late 70's I had a LP Standard IIRC that had
minihumbuckers.
I hated them. I also had at the time a 73 LP Custom with humbuckers. I
wound up butchering the Std. to fit humbuckers. That was also the
first and last time I ever attempted to do any work on an instrument.
Cheers, Rick Del Savio :)

The new Epi Sheraton Elite has the remade mini-humbuckers that were once
used on the Les Paul

http://strings.gibson.com/pickups/minihumbuckers.shtml

Guitar Player and others seem to like the interplay between these humbuckers
and the 335 style body of the Sheraton. It doesn't sound like a Les Paul but
it also does not sound like a 335.

Try this if you have a Les Paul Deluxe with mini-humbuckers:
1) Set the toggle switch for both pickups
2) turn all vol/tone controls to 10.
3) Back off the treble volume until the tone just starts to turn (say 8-9.5)

You'll get a really sweet bell-like sound that is perfect for clean sounds
and has no other
sound like it. It's a real tone pleasure.

Was that a Standard or a deluxe? I know that 9 out of 10 Deluxes on the
market have been routed for full-size hums...

Hi Mike. It had to have been a Standard then. My main man at the time,
Dickey Betts, had switched to that axe/pu configuration around the time
of the Allman Brothers album "Brothers and Sisters". '78? Take care,
Rick :))

All stock Deluxe. A Standard will sound completely different.

Damn shame. Full size humbucker Gibson Les Paul Standards are a dime a
dozen.
If you hated the mini-humbuckers, why buy the guitar in the first place? A
good deal?

Factor in the cost of routing and a new set of pickups and it would probably
be a wash.

A good deal. I recall $325 w/case new. I was also a kid at the time. but
the good news is that a very close friend of mine still owns it and
being a luthier he has that axe in great shape. New paint job, new
inlay on headstock and an original PAF p/u in the neck position. Rick :)

BTW, playing the mini-humbuckers in the neck position elimiates most of the
treble with the volume and tone knobs cranked turned up.

All's well that ends well. I put the "hot rod" magnet kit in my minis to get
the boost up but that was reversible.
Now I use Seymour Duncans and have the original harness in storage. In fact
only the tail stock is original and there's no chrome left on it.
3 fret jobs, as many collapsed bridges, and the infamous "green" where the
arm rests over the body. Not that I have a
much wider selection of tools the Goldtop doesn't see so much use and abuse.
I do have a LP Custom but the sound is "dark" to me
and use it accordingly.
