I've had one for a month now. It is lightweight, powerful and capable of
handling everything that I do. I play jazz gigs which range in volume levels
from organ groups to solo guitar. With an organ group recently I was told
that I could come down some. I played a huge lobby of an Art Museum that
was packed with people there for a party with a guitar, bass and drums trio
and had more than enough power. It gets a sound not unlike that of an early
Polytone. I don't know how it would perform on rock or fusion gigs, someone
else will have to answer for that but for the types of gigs that I do there
is more than enough power, it has a great sound with my 175, it is very
quiet and it's lightweight one piece construction makes it easy to
transport.I keep another amp in the trunk that I can link it to should it
ever be needed but that hasn't happened yet and I doubt if it ever will. The
price is fairly reasonable for a high powered (110w) small (one eight in.
speaker) amp. I'm more than happy with it.

I have also had one for a month or more. I play it in trio (drums,
elec bass) and solo settings, and have had great luck with it. Charlie
did a great job describing it, so I won't bother.

In my mind it is at the upper end of the 80% in the 80/20 rule. It is
about 80% as good as any other jazz amp I have heard, and costs half or
less of an AI/RE rig. That 20% more quality comes at twice the price,
which for me, isn't worth it at this time (diminishing returns). My
only complaint is that mine didn't come with the top mounted handle.

I'm also a JazzKat user and like it. I prefer the Clarus/RE rig, but
the JazzKat is more convenient. Like Charlie, I find it a good
replacement for the Polytone.

You lived down here for a while and know the size of High Museum . I played
there with a group for a huge crowd with no other amplification . I'm
completely satisfied.

I was worried about that too but needlessly. I guess it must have something
to do with the design of the cabinet, it sounds like it is a larger speaker.

I've tried one and in my opinion it cann't compare with Poly IV or a good
amp with 12", let alone that it will give you enough power depth in a large
concert hall. Nevertheles it is a nice little box with agreeable sound for
small clubs or practicing at home.

Just to add balance and perspective to the recommendations.

As a result of the many praises of the Jazzkat on RRMGJ I made a trip
to a music store in Toronto a couple of weeks ago to possibly pick one
up (I had the cash in hand).

I tested a Jazzkat (new version with handle on top) side by side with a
Roland Cube 30 and a Fender Blues Junior.

I plugged an expensive archtop into the Jazzkat and the first thing
that came at me was a buzz. The speaker was two feet from my ears (the
room was about 12x8 ft.)
I just couldn't get a decent sound from the amp. It sounded like an 8"
amp.
Did not have the full warm sound that a 10" or 12" (preferably) will
give you.

I also brought a mic with me expecting to plug guitar and mic into the
amp but I didn't even bother with the mic.

I ran through all of the effects, by feel, couldn't make out the tiny
writing.
The reverb was the only effect that seemed useable.

Next I plugged into the Roland Cube 30.
Big difference. I have one of these amps at home. Now I had a full warm
jazz sound.
Sure a 12" speaker would be even nicer, but would add to the weight.

Then I plugged into the Fender Junior. It was a total disaster. I had
tried this amp a few times before with the same results.

If I were you, I'd A/B the Jazzkat with a Roland Cube 30 or 60 before
making any purchases.

Maybe you tried a defective amp. It seems way too many working pro
jazz guitarists use these amps for it to be as bad as you report
(absent a problem with the particular amp).

It has to be better than that to be worth the asking price. If it's
going to sit in one place (like your practice area) you should get a
fender tube amp, say a Twin. The world's heaviest guitar amp.

I think the JazzKat is a very good value, but I'd spend a little more and
get an AI Corus if it were my only amp and I were using high end archtops.
The combination of compactness, light weight and good sound is hard to beat
in this price class.

Thanks. I didn't know that they were carrying these.
I may go down there and check them out. Not that I'm gonna buy one. I'm
all amped out right now.

I almost bought a Peavey Transtube Bandit the other day though, the
current ones with the red stripe on the bottom. It sounded great for
jazz (better than my Pearce, I thought...And I had the Pearce there to
A/B...And I like my Pearce much more than my Clarus/T-8 rig), not too
bad for pop/R&B chording, and the overdrive sounds were passable.

The R&B chording capabilities weren't quite what I like though. It
seemed impossible to get a really glassy bright sound out of the amp.
(The Pearce has a great, bright, full, R&B chording sound, and you can
overdrive it a bit too if you want for Steve Cropper type things). Of
course I was using one of the store's guitars and it was of questionable
quality. I think these amps would sound better with an EVM-12L, but the
Peavey Sheffield speaker sounded pretty good.

I've been hearing a few drummers complain about the down-firing speakers
in the Coda amps. They claim it's too hard to hear the attack of the
bass so it's hard to lock the time together with the bass player.
The Codas also seem to be less than ideal depending on the room
characteristics, especially the floor material.
Not sure I'd want those problems in a guitar amp.
Of course I'm speaking out of my ass here seeing as how I've never
played through a Corus.

No I didn't hit the ground switch. It could have been that or as
PMfan says a defective amp.

Leaving the hum aside though, the guitar sound was clean, but just not
full and round as was the case with the Cube 30.

I think my Pro Reverb with 2 JBLs loaded into it would be a contender.

I play with four bass players who use AI Contras. I've never heard a
drummer complain about their sound.

The attack of a bass note comes from the upper harmonics, which are
handled by the Coda/Contra/Corus's front-firing mid-range.

Joey,

Many people speak out of their ass but at least I think you something say.
Some speak of their ass and you can figure out what probably come out. But
for what it is worth Dave has nailed the situation, if you have no money
issues get the AI an a cab. Money is always and issue so the jazzkat may be
it, I am sure it is worth a polytone. OH, I am speaking out of my ass since
I have not done the comparison.

Well, I might as well jump in on this with my own "unusual" take on it.
I've had the JazzKat, a Clarus/RE combo and a Clarus/Contra cab. I had my
own issues with the Clarus/Contra downfiring speaker and problems with
miking, so I'll leave that out. I wanted a combo rather than the Clarus/RE
business because of the 1.5 seconds it took me to attach the head to the
speaker cab.
OK, so I went with the JazzKat. Nice little amp, but 8 doesn't equal 10 or
12 no matter how you slice it.
But, here was my real issue (OK you guys are going to kill me), When I play
I like to take everything out of my pockets. Keys, wallet, cell phone,
sunglasses, extra picks. Then maybe I'm carrying a folder of charts. And
you've got to have a latte with you. Where does all this crap go during a
gig? Right on top of my amp. And because of the slanted face of the
JazzKat, the top surface was quite small and would not accommodate all of my
"accoutrements." Kept falling on the floor. So, I got rid of it.
Solution: I wanted a combo. Had to be traditionally shaped for the OCD
reasons listed above. Could have only one speaker. Had to be light,
powerful and the rest of the litany. Evans RE200.
But I have a custom Fuchs Jazz Classic with an Eminence 12 that I had Bob
Burt fit into the smallest possible combo cabinet. Sorry, but none of those
other rigs hold a candle to it. I'll probably keep the Evans for when I
REALLY don't want to lift, but for now I can't not play out of that Fuchs.
Anybody want to buy an Evans?

It may have been humming, because it didn't know the words, but the
switch in the back usually does the trick. Those music stores are
notorius for interfering with hums, lights, and pain-in-the-ass
novices. It's still a good little amp and floor-model anythings are
subject to trauma. It comes down to taste and preferance. You can take
the amp to the beach!

Amazing how strong we had to be back then. I used to lug my Fender
Concert and before that my Musicman HD-130 (about as heavy as a twin,
albeit with wheels) to each gig.

Now I'll put off taking it to the shop for months because I don't want

I have been interested in playing through one of these for a while. I heard
John Pizzarelli, in a concert situation, using a Jazzkat and it was very
impressive sounding. Obviously there was some sound reinforcement but as
far as I could tell there was simply a mic placed about 6" in front of the
speaker.

I've had the same curiosity expressed in this thread about the 8" speaker,
however, some of the comments made by people using these in band situations
(w/B3's) have gotten me to thinking that this amp could serve me well for
jazz and GB gigs.

I emailed the manufacturer asking where I could find one in the Boston area.
I received a received a gramatically shaky reply, with numerous
misspellings, referring me to their web site (which has the closest dealer
in NY) and suggesting that I mail order from Jeff Hale or Legato. It amazes
me that this company hasn't figured out that Berklee is in Boston and that
there is a huge marker for an amp as portable as this in the Boston area.

Ric,
Re: the buzz, there is a switch on the back (I forget the technical
term for it) to deal with that buzz. I recently played a large party
with my trio using a mike, Eastman AR805CE and JazzKat. Initially I had
a buzz, but flipped the switch and the buzz was gone.

I have played in small to medium size venues with both solid body
electric and my Eastman (floating Johnny Smith p/u) with a trio,
quartet and quintet (with drums). I have no problem cutting through the
mix. I usually have the master knob at 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock and the
individual gain knobs are usually at 9-12 o'clock as well. I usually
keep the eq at 12 o'clock. The effects I keep light, using the first
reverb setting with the level knob at 8-9 o'clock set for both
channels.

The quartet is a gyspy jazz group (Minor Swing) and I use the xlr to
mike the guitar as well as with the p/u. I am very happy with my gear,
simple to use and easy to carry (my Eastman case gets tons of comments
even before I open it up to show off the guitar).
Merry Christmas,
Victor

I used to sit on top of my Twins a lot of times especially at rehearsals. I
guess one has to give up some things for overall convenience. Years ago if
we wanted to add another speaker we would just clip two wires onto the
speaker wires and run them to the other speaker. I was wondering if those
who feel that they need a larger speaker attached at times could have this
modification performed by a technician along with a jack on the side of the
amp. Knowing that the new amps don't always operate the same way as the old
ones it's not something I'd advise doing until it was checked out by someone
who knows for sure.

That doesn't amaze me as much as the Boston music stores that haven't
figured out that they could sell JazzCats. I'm sure that the
manufacturer would be happy to sell amps to any Boston music store.

I think the Fender Jazzmaster would be worth a look. Actually the cab
is only 17lbs, so together the head and cab are about together are
24lbs. I have one and am happy with it. It's versatile enough for more
than only jazz.

Yeah, I know cabinet design these day is really producing a lot more low-end
and fuller sound from smaller enclosures. That's very cool, as I'm not a big
fan of carrying around a lot of large gear these days. But I am always
looking for a full, warm sound. These amps sound like a great product.

Thanks Charlie,

Ted

Thanks for correction, Dan - do you have any recordings of
Jazzmaster that you could share ? I have Polytone Mini Brute IV
but I thought Jazzmaster would be a good second amp
(a backup or a primary amp). My Polytone is 15" and with some
guitars it is a bit too bassy.

For guitar, I generally get positive comments regarding the wide dispersion
of the AI combos. With closed back cabs I often bring two cabs, one for the
band and one for the audience. With the AI I get heard in all directions
without aggravating feedback issue like from an open backed cab. (I've never
played on a shag carpet, but I suppose that could be a negative for the
downfiring speaker, even though rare).

The cab that's available with the Jazzmaster Ultralight truly sucks. Any
Raezer's Edge, Redstone or Leonardo blows it in the weeds. Even the Polytone
extension cabs are superior, IMHO. HOWEVER, the head is really nice,
particularly for acoustic or fingerstyle jazz. The amp has only one speaker
outlet, yet it's designed to drive a two-ohm load, so it's hard to optimize
it's power with most 8 ohm cabs. Still, it sounds good and has good Reverb
and effects.

Oh, the distortion channel also sucks. It's noisy and any decent level and
has a really hard, solid-state at it's worst kind of tone. Boss makes tons
of superior pedals.

My praise may seem underwhelming, but I find myself using the amp a lot when
I play fingerstyle. It also matches well with my Boss GT-6 multi-effects
pedal. It's good looking, fairly light and compact, seemingly well made and
good sounding. It's a shame that the matching cabs sucks so bad, making it
hard to really hear it at its best unless you're at some place like J.
Hale's where there'll be an army of other cabs to try. In the next month or
two I'll take it to a rehearsal to see if it'll deliver enough power with
either a NY8-ER or Redstone RS10-ER.

Personally, I'd trust it over a Polytone any day and it IS competitively
priced. I think a lot of people will like it with a T8 cab.

I just used my jazzmaster ultralight with a redstone 8" to record a new
trio CD in a great studio in Charlotte, NC. The engineer/owner told me
that it was the quietest rig that he had ever had in his studio ever,
and he was going out to purchase one. That says a lot to me...I also
love it for portability and power both. I still use my Heritage
Freedon 38 for tube amp, but my polytones are long gone...

I would imagine higher end/priced cabs like the RE and Redstone are
better than the Fender cab. The Fender's a closed back with a Jensen
Neodymium speaker and a magnetic docking system for the head which is
nice. Closed back does make it a tad more bassy and directional. The
whole 2 ohm thing does kinda strink, but when you use it you do get the
250 watts output power, and if someone in the band can't hear it with
that power, it's time for miracle ear. The Raezers Edge site recommends
their 4 ohm twin 8 for the Jazzmaster and I'd love to try/have but I
personally don't want to spend that type of money and don't put as much
weight into cabs/speakers as some do. But maybe I can convince the wife
someday. I don't agree at all about the drive channel, but as with
everything, it's to each their own and their application/needs.

JT,
I don't have any clips right now unfortunately. I didn't have the amp
for the recordings I did earlier this year. I'm also a bit unorganized
right now moving into a new house (which is having a direct effect on
my guitar buying options).

Have you tried the Ultralight with any 4 ohm cabs (RE TWin 8"s etc)?

I would guess that problem could be overcome by placing the amp on a piece
of wood, a small table etc.

I was in the 12 Fret in Toronto recently, comparing the Jazzmaster to
the Ultrasound to the JazzKat. I bought the JazzKat, partly cost (the
Fender package is over $1000), simplicity and sound.

Off topic re: places to sit when your amp is too small. Part of my
reason buying the JazzKat, I was using a Behringer ACX1000, was due to
portability. But now that I can't sit on my amp, I carry a stool around
too. Go figure.

eBay this mornin g:

Item #170063294495

I've recently started playing through an AER 40 and LOVE it! True
