Anyone heard it? It's more straight ahead than his usual stuff

Funny, I just got out "Unspeakable" fro mthe library, first disc of
Frisell's I have ever heard. I don't know if this disc compares to the
current or any other, but I like it.

Is that the 2 disc live one you're talking about? I'll have to check
it out. Frisell is one of my favorites.

Hmm,

I don't know if I would characterize it as "straight ahead" - it's a
tad less rock-oriented than Unspeakable but's its still very much in
the country-jamband vein that Frisell has been in for a number of
years. It's a fantastic set though, very focused overall - really
captures the vibe of his recent shows, IMHO. I'ts an interesting
contrast to the Live disc with Baron and Driscoll.

The recent motion-frisell-lovano disc is a bit more straight ahead - I
think there's even a standard or two on there.

I just caught him on Saturday at Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia. He was
playing trio with organist Sam Yahel and drummer Joey Baron. Interesting
stuff. He was playing some Dylan covers ("Just Like A Woman" and "Hard
Rain's Gonna Fall), John McLaughlin's "Follow Your Heart," an uptempo Bb
blues, and a couple originals (the titles of which I don't know). Good set
and a great sound (he was playing a Tele with some effects through two newew
Fender Deluxes). He isn't doing the volume pedal thing anymore.

Very atmospheric and free-floating though. Beautiful.

I recommend his work on "Bill Evans", a Paul Motian CD with Joe Lovano
and Marc Johnson`. After hearing his country-rock vibe, he really shows
the ability to chameleonicize himself....did I just make up a word? He
does get the Evans feel on guitar quite well; not as intensively as the
Sid Jacobs' book/CD, but I recommend it.
