D'addarios quality

This is the 2nd time in two weeks the D'addarios strings that i am
using "came off" the tailpiece on two seperate guitars. This is really
weird.

The strings did not break, the ball ends just broke off while my
archtops were lying in their cases. D'addarios have to really do
something about their quality control.

The same thing happened to me during the summer on a set of Chromes
Flat wound 12's, the D string broke of all things.
The guitar was resting on a stand at the time.

Their quality control is really bad these days and getting worse.
I've been getting G strings in my sets of Chromes that simply are not
flat-wound. They're ground-wound or half-flat at best.
I've been buying spare individual Chromes for a while now so I can
usually make up for the bad G string and don't have to toss the whole
set in the trash.
They told me once that I could mail them the bad G strings and that they
would send me free replacements. But I never wanted to bother with it. I
think I might take them up on the offer though because I'm starting to
get a big pile of bad G strings. This started a few years ago and I
hoped it would just go away. But it seems to be getting worse.

Besides Thomastik what other brands of flat-wounds do you guys think are
a good replacement for the D'Addario Chromes (.012 - .052) set,
hopefully in a similar or cheaper price range?

I wrote and complained about quality; I had purchased four sets and for one
reason or another three sets were bad. The luthier/dealer I use had the
same problems and complained. They sent me three complementary sets but I
would have preferred to have quality strings to start with. Last week a
ball end came off of one of my guitars as well.

GHS set 1800 or 1810's they are a compound wound string and not exactly
flats but no finger noise. They are very good and I think GHS quality is
pretty consistent.

Crap, I've been having just that problem, but have been blaming my

I'll have to try a Non-D'Addario 2nd to experiment.

I like the strings from Galli, but they're probably more expensive,
especially in the US or Canada:

Rather difficult if one doesn't read Italian. But I did find the flatwound
strings and tried to order a few sets. The one online dictionary I tried
didn't explain what they wanted for a "financial code" in the registration
page, so I gave up. Also, it doesn't hide the password! Great.

All the stores I go to here carry D'Addario flat wounds through the 13s. I
don't see other brands, though. So I thought I'd try ordering from Galli.
(The monster string site in the US won't ship outside the US/Canada.)

My guitars carry a set of d' Addario chromes at least 2 years, so you won't
hear me complaining. I only change them when the intonation starts
suffering. They never break or come off.

You use flatwounds, Dick? I'm not sure why, but that surprises me. And
keep them on for two YEARS?!? Amazing.

I bought a set of chromes probably 12 years ago and have never been
able to put them on a guitar. I pick up guitars belonging to others
that have flat-wounds on them and they all sound dead. I've always
assumed they started out less bright and go flat a few days later.

I've never been able to understand them. I've got some free time; I
should try them out.

Yes. I bought my 175 in 2005 and I think I changed the strings a year ago,
so in 2008 ;) Two years on average is my guess.

I change my Chromes about once a year, and just change strings One
and Two when they go flat.
If I'm doing a lot of gigs where I sweat, then then I'll put on a
fresh set after that season..

The gig guitar stays in the case and I prcatice on something else

####'s time is shared with a few guitars, so I guess he's not putting

I get 8-10 months out of my TI flats typically, and I play the same
guitar every day.

Anyone have any ideas? I tried a few boutique types, but they died
fast. Back in the '60s I dug Jimmy D'Aquisto's strings until that
certain hip alloy became unavailable. It is possible that Darco was
making them for him. I forgot, as it's all a blur. I have never seen
that alloy used since. I think real silver was involved, but I may
have mixed it up with some dream I had. Hi Ho Silver Awayyyyyyyyyy!!
Those were hip play'n/sounding strings.

Try the Pryamid flat wounds. They're available from this guy in
Mississauga :

Mail order only - no pick-up in person the last time I checked. Must be

D'Addario quality is one of the reasons I discovered GHS Brite Flats
some 25 yrs ago. I have heard it said that D'Addario might make GHS. I
don't know and I don't care. I put on a set of Brite Flats and change
the 12 and 16 about every 2 years. Never change the wound strings.
Never had a failure with them. Have them on about 20 guitars now.

The "secret" I found to Brite Flats is to play them about 2 weeks
until they are broken in --- then they are slick like ...., well,
flatwounds.

I like the Sadowsky flat wounds that came on my Heritage Eagle. But
they are only somewhat nicer than the Chromes, so that's what I

I have been following the thread for a while. It's not clear to me if
people have been experiencing problems with other D'addario sets or only
with the chrome sets.

I have been using the EJ21 jazz light nickel wound - round wound strings and
have not experienced any problems.
