Yamaha have come out with a semi-hollow body version of the rather
modern-looking Les Paul-type guitar. I have always wanted a short scale
guitar for some incomprensible reason, but have shied away from LP's because
of the weight. I tried a few other Yammies that used this same body style
in a full solid, but they were a little on the harsh side (read
ready-to-rock) as far as the pickups go, (although the AES820 with the
Dimarzios was suprisingly sweet). The AES620-SB I bought is a terrific
guitar, very comfortable body, nice low action - which suits me fine, I just
play sitting down and quite quietly anyway. Anybody else play one of these?

Dallas,

I haven't played one yet, but I was looking at them online and they
seem very intriguing. You say that they come with Dimarzios; can you
tell what model they are? Are you playing jazz with yours? You
mentioned that your guitar sounds warm; what gauge strings are you
using?

Thanks in advance.

I tried one at sam ash and it was as heavy as most les pauls. Maybe we're
talking about a different guitar? The one I played was a solid body. It was
about $499 at Sam Ash.

The one LP style guitar I have seen lately with proper weight and
balance would be the Guild Bluesbird. It is chambered, although
probably minimally.

Actually, I think bad balance creates a perception of weight,
especially when playing sitting down. The LP was designed by and for
guy who played with the butt of the guitar between his thighs. I have
never felt comfortable playing them sitting down. I think LPs are
mostly popular today with folks who like to play them standing up, with
the strap maxed out to full guitar poser position.

Probably the solid body with the most egonomic design is the
Jazzmaster, but LPs are way more popular for a lot of reasons having
nothing to do with its poor ergonomics.

Still the original LP (particularly with mini humbuckers) is one of my
favorite all time guitars. The fundamental of the note is unsurpassed
by anything else ever made.
