Played one of these yesterday and it was killer. Thinking about buying
it as a tweener guitar. I liked it better than the Ibanez AS200. It
wasn't as shrill sounding and the coil taps make it really versatile.
This one is much better than the one you and I had...

Is it pretty much the same as the ones in the 80s? Those were nice
guitars.

I used to play one briefly, it was a nice guitar; but expensive for a
Japanese made instruments.
But they are certainly a bargain used.
The Yamaha Custom Shop version of this is even better.

I can believe it. The one we had was gorgeous - perhaps the prettiest
guitar I';ve owned; just didn't have that tonal vibe. I'd love to hear
your clips of it if you pick it up.

I just heard a guy playing a Yamaha SA1200S (semi-hollow w/spruce top)
and really dug the sound on that one, too.
What's the difference betwixt the the 2200 and the 1200S?

I think the series that starts with the 2, is upscale, better tuners,
Ebony Board, Gold instead of Chrome plating, Coil Split etc. larger
markers instead of Dots.
I don't think they had spruce tops just the centre block or part of it
was spruce.
Beech and Birch tops in the catalogue I have, but there's no
indication of the year.

I bought a Yamaha SA2200 2 years ago to use for more bluesy playing bc
my D'Angelico XL wasn't quite up to it. But I've found that the Yammy
is just a better all round guitar, plays everything well, and gets
enough jazz tone that I can use one guitar for sets that need high
variation in tone. The quality is superb, and better than any Gibson
I've had. I had the AEX 1500 before this, and Yamaha puts out a
great product. There are carved top SA2000s around from the 80sand
90s and I'm looking for one of those. But I can't say anything bad
about the SA2200. The coil taps extend the range very nicely.
