I suggest that you speak directly with Bill Fender at Legato Guitars. Bill
sells both and he will give you his honest opinion as to their relative
merits and demerits.
If you ever purchase an extension speaker for either one, make it a Raezer's
Edge.

I have been interested in the rack-mount model. What do you think of
it?

You'll get a slew of Evans are better replies. I prefer the Polytone. An
Evans can NOT get the tone I get from a Polytone. The Polytone is muuuuuch
cheaper. Reliable. If you want to sound like the great jazz players on
your albums/CDs, they are almost all playing Polytones.
Most people who went to Evans when that became hot a few years ago now are
selling their Evans and going to Clarus with a Raezor's Edge cabinet.
The sleeper is the old Yamaha G-100 series 2, which some acclaim to be
better than the Evans. A couple were recently sold by a regular here for
$300. They are on Ebay all the time for that much and less but be careful
on ebay.
If I had the money I'd own all 4. Right now I have a Yamaha, and when I
can afford it, will get a Polytone.
Just another opinion.

Having had lessons with Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, and Joe Pass, I can tell
you the reason they used Polytones was the weight and convenience. All
preferred other amps for recording though there's no doubt they were used on
some recording sessions.
Hm, more info please. What other amps did they like?
By the way, Jack, my Yamaha is not the same series as yours, a series 1 I
think. Curious if you have any reflections on the relative tone of the
series you had vs. others.
Thanks
I think they mostly preferred fender tube amps in the studio although Barney
preferred some other esoteric tube amp. I can't remember the model. They
were definitely into low maintenance setups which is why they used Polytone.
(Of course, getting the polytones for free may have helped, too!)

I had a G100 series I at one time. It was very nice. The series II was
redesigned by Paul Rivera before he left and went to fender and later
started Rivera amps. The version I had tremelo as I recall. It was very nice
for getting a bright, George Benson type of tone.

The first time I saw Barney live (in the late 50's) he was using an
amp similar to a Fender Twin (not a Fender) with two JBL D-123
speakers in it. In the mid sixties he was using a Fender Twin each
time I saw him live. Last time I saw him about 6 months before his
stroke he was using a Walter Woods.

Thanks Harry. Still don't have the Roland (or my hifi) all hooked up. Been
spending all weekend trying to figure out why my stupid &($)%#(#** motion
correction program isn't working. Will keep you posted.

Yes, mine has tremelo. So what does the Series II sound like in comparison?
I may get one some day.
