I think martino, at Pat Martino's clinic pat played a really hip
sounding voicing and then said "you know, one of those vic juris
chords!" everybody smiled. vic can play some unbeleivable sounding
chords.

Vic is one of the greats! I had a couple of lessons with him many
years ago when he lived in New Jersey, but I doubt he would remember
me.
Just keeping up with Dave Liebman is a feat in itself. Vic's comping
on Aebersold volume 81 (which is Liebman's music plus his reharms and
reforms to some standards) is superb:
http://www.jazzbooks.com/playalongs/081.htm - in fact that group is a
great example of piano and guitar playing some seriously challenging
material and never getting in each other's way. They seem to always
take turns comping. There is an adjunct CD that actually has Liebman
playing with volume 81 (
http://www.jazzbooks.com/scripts/search.asp?detail=1&item=175 )
I just love Liebman's playing, especially on tenor.
When I last saw Vic he was playing a solid body of some kind, maybe
you can fill us in on his gear.

His classical fingerstyle technique suggests he began his playing that
style, but some versatile guitarist can take on any style at any stage
as if they always played that style? I would guess the former though?
This may be already answered somewhere on the internet though?

Vic is one of my favorites, too. I grabbed a lesson with him this past fall,
and Dave Stryker just happened to be over his house! Both some heavy cats,
though they seem to act like regular human beings, too! ;)
I'd love to know if Vic has any plans in the works to do a CD of unaccompanied
playing - I'd grab that in a second. Also, does he ever play with Bireli Lagrene
anymore? Their playing together is surprisingly compatable, compared to the
idea I had in my mind of what Vic's playing was all about based on the stuff
with Liebman, which just seemed like such a different kind of bag.
Here's a simple question to give him: "What's your secret?" (In twenty words or
less, of course) :)
-Kev
No questions.
But please tell him he's the one musician I've seen here in St Thomas the
past few years that I've really been moved by.
Also tell him Jerry Harris says hello.
And while you're at it, tell him & Dave there's an open invitation at my
place :)

Anyway, here are anwers to questions gathered from this thread. I couldn’t
ask him everything, and some stuff I just forgot about.
"Vertical or horizontal?" :) -- Bob Russell
A- Neither, everything happens on the diagonal.
1. What do the words "horizontal" and "vertical" mean? 2. Which is harder,
Giant Steps or Countdown? 3. Que es mas macho, Tony Bennett o Britney Spears?
4. Over the bars: Hang on and roll, or Superman? -- Jonathan Byrd
A- #1 nothing, #2 neither, #3 Britney #4 whatever
1) Do they like TI or D'Addario strings? 2) Tube or solid state amps? 3)
Does a 335 with coil taps really sound like an L5? Mike
A- #1 Elixer 12-52 rounds, #2 SS, #3 huh?
And don't forget 4) Favorite newsreader? -- Bob Russell
A- NY Times
Does he prefer Richard Glick's $300 cable over the George L's? What??? sputter,
choke gasp!!! He doesn't use the new cable? -- Mark Guest
A- didn’t aske
I thought of another... Does he like the Clarus / RE combination or polytone?
A- Vic uses tow Evans JC-200’s plus an RE- Stealth 12 as an extension.
On side of this rig is for guitar and the other appears to be for his synth
rig.
I thought of another:- 1. Crunchy or smooth peanut butter? 2. Toast or bagel?
D -Mike E.
A- They were fine with banana and strawberry pancakes. Viv takes his coffee
black.
5a) Is BIAB worth the 80 or so bucks? 5b) Any latency issues with his sound
card? 6) Has he tried the Martian's Space Modulator 6.0? Jack is thinking

- Clif
A- Gee Clif, for some reason I totally fogot to ask him these questions.
Maybe next time
Vic mentioned in a Guitar Player interview years ago that he recorded an
album at Van Gelder's studio, and played through a Fender Deluxe amp that
was kept there for Wes Montgomery to record with. Ask him what kind of Deluxe.
Was it a tweed or brown non-reverb model? Tom Jaffe
A- Sorry Tom, I forgot to ask
Did he study with Martino or Sandole? JAZ
Neither, Vic studied with a local guy named Ed Berg.
Does Vic Juris still teach at William Paterson?? -Josh
A- Vic teaches at Rutgers. He assumed that gig after Ted Dunbar passed away
about 4 years ago. He said he went down there for what he thought was to
be an informal meeting and was asked to give a demo lesson to a student with
about 50 people watching. He said he was thinking to himself that he wasn’t
prepared for that, and that he was wearing shorts and sandals, and that there
was no way he’d get this gig. But they called him two days later.
When I last saw Vic he was playing a solid body of some kind, maybe you can
fill us in on his gear. -Dan
A- Vic was playing a guitar made by luthier Tom Doyle. Its a small bodied
thin line archtop, very much like my PRS hollowbody (which he loved playing-
almost wouldn’t give it back)
will he be allowed to use the guest towels? Rick R.
A- yes
Just reminding y'all they're playing Saturday night 4/27/02 at the Vermont
Jazz Center in Brattleboro -Robby
A- Yeah, how did that show go
His classical fingerstyle technique suggests he began his playing that style,
but some versatile guitarist can take on any style at any stage as if they

answered somewhere on the internet though? Icarusi
A- I didn’t ask him about his, but his RH technique did not seem classically
trained. He does lots of hybrid picking as well as flat and fingerstyle.

playing - I'd grab that in a second. Also, does he ever play with Bireli

Here's a simple question to give him: "What's your secret?" (In twenty words
or less, of course) :) –Kev
A- I didn’t ask about any upcoming projects. I didn’t really ask him what
the “secret” is, but I feel he would have said that there is no secret, and
that he just does what he does after year of practice and playing experience.
You can be sure he’s not thinking scales.
No questions. But please tell him he's the one musician I've seen here in
St Thomas the past few years that I've really been moved by. Also tell him
Jerry Harris says hello. And while you're at it, tell him & Dave there's
an open invitation at my place :) Jay Carlson
A- Hi Jay, sorry I didn’t see your post until after the visit. I’m glad
Vic made it down there, but it sounds like your even more isolated then when
you lived in Maine. OTOH, we had some snow this morning!
Well, that’s it.
Now I've got one for you, Mark. Do you think that, having associated
yourself with RMMGJ, your reputation has been damaged or enhanced? :<)

That's good Tom, I dunno, you tell me::)
Did you turn them on to any of your tunes or complimentary CDs?
I think Dave Liebman plays on an Elvin Jones LP I got a long time ago
(Genesis). With Frank Foster on alto(?) and Gene Perla on bass. No piano
or guitar. If my memory is correct, I can't even imagine what Dave Liebman
plays like these days.

Interesting...Must be the philadelphia mystique...
When I studied with Martino, Pat said Vic Juris was one of his best
students...
Another interesting thing: When I studied with Dennis Sandole, Dennis
talked of Pat Martino (and also Coltrane) as if they had really cut
their teeth studying with him. Pat claimed he learned very little from
Dennis....
Oh well...

In the London radio concert with Liebman, Vic seemed to divide his
playing sound in 3 consecutive sections, classical accoustic/nylon
sound, then archtop-type sound and last distorted 'fusiony' sounds.
Did they divide the concert you saw in that way?

If they did divide the concert like London, what guitar was Vic
playing for the classical/nylon sounds?

Were you able to see what synth he using?
