I remember stumbling into the velvet sounds lp at a drive-in theater swap
meet. I knew some of his country, rockabilly picking. Finding him in jazz
was one of those important crossovers for me, then a mid teen rockabilly
blueser. Velvet sounds came right about the same time as Grant Green's
western thing for me... I caught them both near the same time. Opened things
up considerably.
I got to jazz winds a bit later. What a class act.
Hank has been very important to/for me, his ability to cross what some deem
lines.
the Velvet Guitar gal on blue cover thing. Getting to Jazz Winds was
something again. The first was fine. The second, finer still.
> for me:
> Tony Bennet and k.d Lang
> Louis Armstrong "A Wonderful World"
That single to this day is my all-time favorite song. What a gorgeous
rendition of a song that makes you just be happy to be alive. Need more of
that kind of influence nowadays. And, of course, nobody can sing it like LA
did.
Greg
Glad to see you're a fan of Tony and k.d.; they're two of my all time
favorite singers. I have that Louis Armstrong record too; I'll have to dig
it back out and give it a listen (haven't heard it in years).
BTW, it was great to meet you at the guitar congress; sorry I didn't get a
chance to talk to you more. I really enjoyed finally getting to hear you
play live, too. Two of the highlights of the congress for me were hearing
the trios of you, Howard Alden and Martin Taylor, and the one of you,
Howard, and Jim Hall.
Also enjoyed hearing you, Howard, and Cheryl Bailey tear up Donna Lee.
Still hoping you can make it to south Florida some day.

1.John Scofield Trio - EnRoute/Live
This is shaping up to be my favorite Scofield CD of all time. I own every
release he's put out except for "Up All Night", and this is up there with "Time
On My Hands" and "What We Do", as well as that Miles Davis tribute CD he did
with Joe Henderson.
2.Charlie Haden - The Montreal Tapes
This is a recent release and it's a live trio with Joe Henderson and Al Foster.
They sound great, even though Charlie's solos can be really long.
3.McCoy Tyner - Super Trios
Two trios that kick butt. McCoy with Ron Carter/Tony Williams or Eddie
Gomez/Jack Dejohnette.
-Jon
norman blake and tony rice - self titled. really great musical guitar
playing!
phil woods quintet - bouquet. tom harrell sounds amazing on this
record!
maria schneider - allegresse. I am like addicted to this record.
definitely one of my top ten cds of all time.
incidentally I saw maria's orchestra last week, performing tunes from
her new record. they played a simply gorgeous song called "sky blue".
really emotional performance, she had me and most of the audience damn
close to tears. donny mccaslin is playing tenor with her now, his
playing is just out of this world.

I saw the orchestra with Schneider conducting one time at Visiones (must
be more than 10 years ago), which I think is now defunct. There was one
guy I remember really well playing the shit out of an alto. I was
totally impressed that night, but have not found any recordings that
capture the feeling I got. Any suggestions?
I think I am a binge listener. I get on to something and it is all
I'll listen to for weeks. Lately it has been;
Pat Martino's "The Maker" especially the first tune. LIKE A FREIGHT
TRAIN!!!! when it gets going.
Pat Martino's "Interchange" I really dig the piano player on both cds.
I think his name is Jim Reidl.
Charles Mingus's "Better get it in your soul" I must have listened to
this a thousand times and that is not hyperboil and every time I here
it I hear something new. Just amazing.
I also listen to a lot of Pat Metheny and Jim Hall. I hope to catch
Mr. Bruno sometime in So Cal.
Regards,
Jeff

was such a nice humble guy and a beautiful player that it has me fixin'
to work on some flamenco stuff. also been listening to the Gypsy Kings
also been listening to Jim Hall Live in Japan, I love his that version

The other really nice one I have been enjoying is Charlie Haden and
Kenny Barron's Night and the City

that Mehldau's solo in East of the Sun is the single most inspiring
bit of music I've heard in a long time.
-Ulf Wakenius' solo disc "The Artistry of.."

Yep. Love it. Seems to work real well. Do you like it that way or was it
just a one time thing? Thinking of doing any more JB&JB?
Don
I first saw B.B. King live in Bloomington, Indiana (1970?). I haven't
overdosed on jazz since then, as best as I can remember. Here's my
current three favorites:
Tony Bennett and Bill Evans (1975)
1. Young and Foolish performed by Evans / Tony Bennett - 3:55
2. The Touch of Your Lips performed by Evans / Tony Bennett -
3:56

4. When in Rome performed by Evans / Tony Bennett - 2:55

4:39
6. My Foolish Heart performed by Evans / Tony Bennett - 4:50
7. Waltz for Derby performed by Evans / Tony Bennett - 4:04
8. But Beautiful performed by Evans / Tony Bennett - 3:37
9. Days of Wine and Roses performed by Evans / Tony Bennett -
2:22
Jack Wilkins and Jimmy Bruno "Heading North" (2001)
1. Relaxin' at Camarillo performed by Wilkins / Bruno - 3:40
2. One Note Samba [Duo] performed by Wilkins / Bruno - 4:34
3. Kiwi Bird performed by Wilkins / Bruno - 4:54
4. You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To [Duo] performed by Wilkins /

5. Some Time Ago [Trio] performed by Wilkins / Bruno - 4:57

My favorite DVD's are currently the new release from Jimmy Bruno and
Jack Wilkins, "Live, From the Theater at Washington, Virginia (1999)"
and "Triplets of Belleville." The "Triplets" get top honors, because,
IMHO, the best actor award for 2003 should have gone to the dog named
Bruno from that movie. Jimmy and Jack play great, tell good jokes, and
dress sharply. But can they bark convincingly at trains? The theme
song is pretty nice, too, but it's all about the acting chops.
Dean
Forget the dog! There's a new footage of Django showing how the man actually
played.
from a completely different direction, one of my most listened to CD's
from the past year is Gillian Welch's Soul Journey. Fantastic
Americana roots songwriter.
I think Wes' Impressions: The Verve Jazz Sides is wonderful.

I've been listening to Tony Rice's "Unit Of Measure" as we speak which is
really a great sounding recording of his guitar......and playing of course.

What I've been listening to lately is "Rhythm Willie" with Herb Ellis,
Freddie Green, et al, and George Barnes and Ruby Braff, "Live at the New
School" and the Gershwin album. My tastes change from time to time, but
that's what is in my CD and MP3 players this week, and probably next.

Chet Baker Trio (with Doug Raney): This is always
I believe that I found it at J&R Music World here in NYC, last fall,
before the John Pisano night at Birdland. Their website does not
indicate that they have it in stock now. Amazon.com and DVD Empire
claim to be able to get it in a couple weeks, but you know how that
usually goes.

=============================
Rice has a very distinctive acoustic guitar tone. Just a few notes and
you know it's him. What sort of material is he doing on Unit of
Measure?
=============================
Highly recommended....2 or 3 solo chordal type of things and someiddle tunes
with his band ...really good recording though I think. One live thing which is
okay
Manzanita (Rice) - 3:53
2. House of the Rising Sun - 5:26
3. Shenandoh - 4:40
4. Gold Rush (Monroe) - 3:02
5. Jerusalem Ridge (Monroe) - 6:38
6. High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me) (Tiomkine/Washington) - 3:44
7. Beaumont Rag (Traditional) - 3:37
8. Swing '42 (Reinhardt) - 1:56
9. An Olde Irish Aire (Danny Boy) - 2:07
10. Sally Goodin' - 8:31
All Django fans should analyze that "footage" to get a few "tips" on
how to play in his style. But, seriously, I think that Bruno's dream
sequences are the best thing on film since Felini's "Amarcord." I will
not be swayed from my views on this matter!

Yeah he did...no not singing on any of these.
when I saw him at the guitar congress recently (which he sounded great at),
his speaking voice was REALLY gravelly and low, almost like a country
version of Miles. It actually really added to his "soulful quiet and humble
but deadly old west gunslinger" vibe.
