This one is unusual in that it features Metheny in a completely mainstream
context:

Watching this clip persuades me that trading 4s does not necessarilly
bring out the best in an improvisor.

And turning your tone control all the way down does not bring out the best
in guitar tone. Yuck.

In all fairness....you aren't hearing an acurate representation of
Pat's sound....whoever put that vid up recorded their TV screen. I saw
that performance and Pat was kicking' some serious butt!

I'm sure that you know that Pat has done straight ahead sideman gigs
such as
Like Minds with Gary Burton, Time is of the Essence with Mike
Brecker, and Wish with Joshua Redman?

Yeah, but those guys are more or less neo-boppers or post boppers. Roy and
Jackie are playing bop in it's original form for the most part. There is one
surprising segment though; on his second chorus Metheny goes into some of
his more modern 70's style side-slipping etc. McLean follows him by doing
practically the same thing almost as if to say "Is this what you are
doing?", you can see the astonishment on Roy Hargrove's face when that
happens.
