Does anyone have any information regarding the guitar maker Sam Koontz? He
made at least one guitar for Pat Martino back in the early 70's. I was
curious as to whether or not he was still alive (hopefully) and still making
guitars. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure he passed away. I've also seen his name attached to some
Standel guitars; so, he must have worked for them at one time. I've seen
pictures of Koontz's guitars being used by Pat Martino and Steve Giordano.

There are some sleeper Harptone guitars that Koontz designed as well.

His nephew, Mike Koontz is a luthier in Baltimore MD. He made some guitars
for me back in the '80s.

He filed for bankruptcy a few years back. Not sure if he wants to be
contacted...

My experience is that people get over bankruptcy and move on with their
lives. If this Mike person liked people before the BK he'll likely still
like hearing from his friends.

I study with Steve Giordano and the Koontz he owns is his main guitar. It
has a oval sound hole instead of "f" holes and at 25 years old has a
beautiful sound and a patina to match.

By the way, Steve is gigging more and more these days in the Philadelphia
area. If you are unfamiliar with his playing, I suggest you try to go hear
him or find some of his recordings. He is one of the most original and
versatile jazz musicians on the scene today.

Sam Koontz had a shop in Linden NJ. He died well over ten years ago. I never
heard of anyone else taking over the business. So as far as I know what ever
is out there is all that's left.
