So Benson's sound is a combo of a Polytone and a Twin? Very curious!
The night that he let me sit in years ago he was playing a Guild Artist Award
through a Twin. I played his axe but didn't sound like him. His picking style,
touch, etc. have a lot to do with his overall sound.

great. I took a DI and put a mic on the amp and the amp won hands down
when it came time to mix. It was a little noisy (some hiss), but the tone
was superb.

Now, there's something to be proud of --- sitting in with GB! Wow!

I played through Dave Moss's rig a couple of years ago over the course of
our two weeks in EU. The tone of the amp was excellent, but I found it kind
of underpowered for keeping up with drums. One of the finest "livingroom"
amps out there and great for solo or duo gigs too. Clarus/NY8 slays it dead,
however.

I used to play on AER Cube 60. Very good and versatile, small, light but
pretty loud. I plugged mostly acoustic guitar into it, but it had very good
jazz sound with solid body also (I used mahogany body with Seymour Duncan
'59 pups).

I've got the 120 watt Acousticube IIa, which is the top of the line AER and
sounds significantly better than the Compact 60, more headroom, more punch,
etc. It is a wonderful little amp and has just about every feature you'd
want in a Jazz amp except low cost (!)(small, portable, light, seemingly
indestructible, great built in digital reverb) but the fact that the
concentric tweeter cannot be adjusted for volume or turned off completely
(unlike the RE Stealth ER), means that it has just a bit too much crispness
in its sound IMO. It's wonderful for flat top or nylon string though, and
can sound great for acoustic archtops with floating pickups when you want a
bit of that top end. If they'd just put in an adjustable tweeter it might
make the perfect small Jazz amp...
I'll never forget that.It was just one of those lucky things that happen to you
once in a while if you are in this field. There weren't many people in the club
so he asked me if I wanted to start off his last set for him. He left me up
there for the whole set. I was so nervous that his guitar was bouncing up and
down on my lap. If you there is anything more that you would like to know Email
me as I'll be out of here for a few days.
Ya had ta get that one in ? :-)
I'm glad you came over to jam recently so I could pull out my
Clarus/NY8 to avoid it collecting dust... (couldn't resist, sorry).
Why can't anyone make the perfect amp??!?!?
- One Piece
- 15 Pounds tops
- Sounds like AER
- 300 Watts
- Reverb
optional features:
- 30 foot cable with surge protector
- Guitar cable already built in
Add a built-in guitar player and I'll buy it!

That's exactly what I feel about my AcousticubeIIa.
Mine also has a little noisy FX-section (no problem live or
at louder levels).
We need more RE/Clarus dealers in Europe, I'd really like
try out this combo (expecially the RE-cabs).

Hi Morey,
Have you (or anyone else here) tried putting a tube preamp in front of the
AER? I'm playing around with a Clarus / RE S12ER, and I find the tweeter
makes the sound too dry. Once the tube is in the chain, it sounds great for
archtop and nylon. I've not tried flat-top through the rig.

Hi Mark,
I've never tried putting a tube preamp in front of the AER, I just use it
for my flat tops. Maybe I should, but I've been using the Clarus/RE Twin 8
or Stealth ER for my archtops and am happy with that sound. Ironically, with
all these fancy guitars and amplification gear, lately I've been digging my
P90 equipped Les Paul '54 goldtop and a Mark III Boogie for Jazz.... go
figure. I like Jack's idea of a tweeter switch though.
A rheostat like the S12 ER would make me more interested in the AER, but I
*don't* have GAS. None. Not right now.
I like solid bodies for jazz, too.
