i recently got to hang out and chat with the composer of Comin' Home

I've noticed that Larry very seldom uses his pinky when playing.
Several Blues players around here seem to do the same .
Is this a Blues thing?

Can't beat that touch.

That rhythm section is just about perfect too. Tight as can be.
Drummer has great tone and gets on my top ten list. (Think anyone can
get tone on drums? Think again.) Keyboardist has excellent
voicings, wonder what they are? (My spell checking doesn't dig
"voicings." Squaresville, man.)

How does he get the subtle feedback effect on the head?

It's a common guitar thing. Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Raney hardly used
their little fingers during solos, they seemed to do OK. Clapton,
Allman, Page and many if not most rock guitarists don't use their little
fingers. Ditto blues players.

When I started playing guitar I was a fan of Rory Gallagher and Jerry
Garcia; Jerry used all four fingers a lot. My first guitar teacher
insisted on using all four fingers, asking why I would give up 25% of my
fingering capabilities?

Because blues is all about inflection, and it is pretty hard to do
that with your little finger. They don't care about speed, against it
actually.

I played in blues bands for years using all four fingers; never had any
trouble with "inflection" because of it. I could do anything with my
4th finger that I could do with my 3rd- bends, vibrato, etc.

I was playing my weekly gig at The Jazz Corner
on Hilton Head Is. when Ben dropped-in for a listen.
He sat front-row, we played Comin' Home Baby.
He seemed flattered, then burst into laughter when
I announced after the song, "another royalty, Ben..!"
