for anyone who might be interested I've uploaded a new tune called
forever is a long, long time :

http://zebox.com/danstearns_3/
(last song on page)

dan stearns--JI banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, fretless guitar and
bass, electronics and sounds
bryan stearns--clarinet, string synth and fretless baritone ukulele
john clark--flute
pete zolli--hand percussion

i finished and mixed this last night, and listening to it today i
think it actually really came off quite nice--the mixing of acoustics
and electronics and writing almost entirely without any vertical sense
of rhythmic unison. seems like some middle ground between other pieces
of mine like Today and Day Walks In, in that it's a dense and strange
enough sound, but somehow gentler and softer than what i usually do
too i think .anyway, hope somebody might find something in it they
like .

You might consider reducing the size of that picture of your son. It
takes a long time to completely display, even on a high-speed line.
Wow, it's over two megs. In the end, a picture on a web page never
needs retain that much precision. It would look identical, to a user,
at about 300k.

Just a thought.

Regarding the piece, well, usually I don't have too many problems
filling up the air with blabber on any topic. But I have to tell you,
it is very difficult to offer a viewpoint on the things you. They are
incomparable, in the sense that they can't really be compared to
anything. It's tough to say it "sounds good" or it "sounds pretty".
You even seem to bust open those relatively benign categories. Musique
concrete, as it was once called, sort of lives its own life apart from
the rest. It has no greatest hits, or wunderkind du jour. Or if these
exist, they occupy some strata of culture I don't encounter.

So, it sure is unique. I can't help but think that participating in
these enterprises will be a valuable experience for your son's
mind-set: his sense of what creative people do, what limitations are
applicable to him, and what "trying new things" means in a very general
sense. In that regard I think these pieces are fabulous.

Hey Dan

Sounds good. Sounds pretty too.

:-)

Some info on how you "assemble" this would be interesting.

I liked it. But I can't resist saying the 5 minutes and 9 seconds can be
a long, long time too.

thanks guys--gerry, i'll try your advice on the photo, paul--i recoded
this one almost exclusively one instrument at a time, save the mando
and tamborine. when putting it together, composing or mixing, i'm
usually always trying for some hard to to explain thing, sort of
trying for a multi-dimensional, melting mobile i guess.anyway, thanks
again, i do appreciate it. daniel
