My first exposure to his playing was the album "Inner Mounting Flame",
and I still smile every time "Dance of Maya" comes up in iTunes shuffle
mode.

I owned the first two Mahavishnu Orchestra albums back in the days of
vinyl but then kind of lost touch.

However, I discovered the Labeque sisters, playing piano duet
arrangements of Gershwin a few years ago and I was surprised to learn
that John McLaughlin is or was married to one of them, Katia Labeque.

Did they ever collaborate?

Check wiki for "John McLaughlin". Among other things it says this:

John has been married to the French pianist Katia Labeque, who was also
a member of his band in the early 1980s. He is currently married to Ina
Behrend with whom he has a son, Luke (b.1997). Ref.

Thank you indeed.

But has anyone here heard Katia Labeque play with his band back in the
early 80's that could comment on it?

I'd be curious to know how a classical pianist would compare to somebody
like Jan Hammer in that "orchestra."

I went to see this guy at Hofstra University I think it was in the mid
70s. What a piece of junk this "concert" was. No electric guitars or
anything. Even John came out and gave me a stare like he knew what
kind of piece of junk of a night this was going to be all along.

John wrote her solos for her. She did not improvise them. But she
played them with precision, as you might expect.

Yeah, it was probably with that fiddle player L Shankar-something and
a couple of guys sitting down and playing drums of some sort with
their hands.

That sounds like his group Shakti. The drums of some sort would be tabla.

I've heard it's not unheard of for him to collaborate with his partners.

Ah, so she performed them the way she would a classical piece. Not a
replacement for Jan Hammer at all then.

She had more hair on her head that's for sure.

So let me get this straight Greger, JM collaborated with his
collaborators? I'm not sure I can wrap my mind around that.

Actually I didn't, Joe. I sent my response (at least it served to set
thing straight). After I sent it, I thought, who the hell was that
anyway, noted it was you, and only then did I began to question the
tone.

Well, partner isn't necessarily synonymous with collaborator.
