Another grossly overprice, over-hyped hunk of wood ?
You be the judge.
Too bad. I really love my SRV though I had to get it planed and
refretted to play right. I always liked the 12" radius idea and love
the sound of SRV's Lenny. IMO, it's the prototypical tone for maple
neck strats (along with Eric Johnson's clean tone...) I always hoped
they'd offer a production version of the SRV with a maple neck as has
long been rumored. I guess this is the answer. ($$$$$$$$$$)
Maybe Fender should come out with "The way we use to make them" model. They
could tool and put a little more quality into their guitars like they use
to. They did not build built their Co. on writing someone's else's name on
their guitars. Now they have so many guitars I don't think GC could carry
one of each, how many names can you put on a Strat?
Unless you want a vintage Strat, buy some parts and assemble your own.
They're just a bunch of bolted and screwed together components. You
can easily make something better and way more suitable to your
personal taste/style than comes from the Fender factory....at a
fraction of the cost.

With zero resale value and you're taking a chance. I've played plenty
of custom guitars that had issues with necks not being straight, etc.
Quality isn't much different than fender for the most part...

Oh, I thought he wanted a musical instrument, not a certificate of
authenticity (basically stating that this guitar is massed produced by
several minimum wage employees at a factory). The few Strats and Teles
I build sell between $1800.00 and $2400.00 dollars. Unless you're not
paying attention and buying cheap parts off Ebay, it is much easier to
assemble a better guitar than Fender.

Amen to that! If it was good enough for Leo Fender, it's good enough
for me. My SLO (Strat-like object) was built from a Warmoth body and
neck and is a wonderful player- nicer than anything with Fender decals I
have found in the shops for years.
You think THAT's bad...have you seen this one?
I wonder how they get the paint to be worn off the same way on every
guitar. Is there a machine with a belt buckle attached to it that rubs
on the back according to very precise programmed instructions? Maybe
they asked Andy what kind of belt buckle he wore most frequently and
attached that one to the machine for added realism.
Maybe there is another machine with a simulated sweaty arm that rubs
across the front? I dunno.

Never understand who'd actually buy a "new" relic? I'm in the process
of "relic-ing" myself for a lot less, even though it's not a fender.
Probably take me 30 years to make it look like that. Marty

Why would you pay that much money for a guitar that looks like shit?
Maybe Ford and GM ought to start selling road rash trucks. They are already
full of dents and scratches so you have no guilt pounding on a brand
new truck.
I knew a dermatologist that collected expensive guitars.
He didn't play, he hung them in glass cases in his
office. He paid me to tune, change strings and play
them. I'd go once a month. Took care of about six
guitars. Got paid $150 for about 2 hrs of noodling.
Lumpy
Can you play country music?
Sure. Which country would you like?
LOL...trailer-park chic !
<g> And here was me thinking you were just an acoustic luthier, albeit
of some note. Do you post here often? It only just clicked with your
email address. OK here's an ambush, for someone who just have to have
a good ear for acoustic nuances. How do I get a warm "swampy" sound
like Tony Joe White, and good string to string balance (13-56, wound
3rd)?
I think you have to put playing and investing/collecting in separate
pigeonholes. For playing, a Warmoth bitsa, for collecting, a big name
limited edition. Though I think the "instant factory collectable"
bubble has to burst some time.

I meant alt.guitar, which is where I read it.

Trust me here, I don't think that you'd be having much trouble with the
neck not being stright with a guitar by this guy.

I've played Roy's relics... and if Michelle would let me... My parker fly

You could put mine on one for a start - the 'Pete Gay Strat' -
guaranteed to give you more bum notes than any other Strat.

My ISP seems to be in meltdown, so I read it in Google Groups and didn't
notice that it was crossposted. Still, it's nice to know that Roy sometimes
makes electrics. I've turned into a bit of an electric head the past couple
of years, so such things interest me.

I'm waiting on Gibson's Nigel Tufnel Limited
Edition Gold Top LP .. The one with the brass screws
that mounts the pick guard to the body.
Tufnel discovered that replacing those three 1/2 steel screws with
brass ones greatly extended the sustain of the instrument.
That is yet another secret why Beck and Page could never have copied
Nufnel's unique signature solos !

In 2003 there were 183 different versions of Strat a person could order out of the Frontline.
In Fender's effort to become EVERYTHING in the marketplace, they've become NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fender FORGOT how to make their single model instruments from their past.
Their attention to details is nonexistent.
Compare any P-Bass reissue to this original.

Likewise, the rest of their so called FAITHFUL REPRODUCTIONS equally miss the mark.
And, we haven't even touched upon their amps yet.

I saw that magazine! Hilarious. Also at some point, Nigel was
endorsing a guitar shaped like a Marshall Head and 4x12 cabinet. He
swore it sounded a lot better when you attached the second cabinet to
the bottom.
Wow, I just found that someone online auctioned off this guitar:

hey, let's not also forget the modified volume pots - you know, the
ones that also go to 11. I remember Nigel talking about it in Guitar
Player in the eighties, and how excited he was about plugging it into
his custom Marshalls - "yeah, I'm gonna get it to go to 22" :)
Of course, that was then - with those special Marshalls they did for
Nigel in the nineties, he'll be able to go to 33. That is, unless he's
still using that stack of VW Passats and Rabbits......

Tony,
"Swampy" may be too subjective of a term for me to quickly answer.
Often this kind of tone is found in the hands of the player and not in
the box of the guitar. One of my clients often achieves what i would
consider Swampy tone....he gets it from a '63 Stratocaster through a
'64 blackface Deluxe reverb.....and 40 years of playing.
I did a quick search of Tony Joe White and listened to some mp3's.
The majority of what i found was electric work. Though you're asking
about acoustic tone, I would think to achieve "Swampy" tone, there
surely must be an old coricidin bottle in the mix somewhere.
RM
Tony,
Many of us luthiers build electric guitars.....we tend to build a
lot of different instruments that we don't necessarily advertise. All
the electric guitars i build now are custom commissions and don't find
there way into stores. I've built everything from hollow, semi-hollow,
chambered, to full vintage replica electric guitars. The early
electric guitars started as personal instruments and were later sold
to people who would offer attractive sums for them....and usually sold
at times when an attractive sum was sorely needed.
RM.
Copies, LOL...that's priceless. I just build what my clients
commission me to build, which includes several different contemporary
and vintage designs. This way I can provide a more broad selection.
Hey, I hope you can find a buyer that guitar Lance....
RM
Hm. I have a Strat, but it's not a McAliCaster, or a
McColluCaster....clearly, something's lacking.
mh
Hey guys, I want to play just like SRV. You think if I get this
"tribute" model I'll be able to play like him? Or do I actually have
to lay out the $623,500 for his actual guitar if I want to sound just
like him? Tell me what you think.
Smoke three packs a day and you can have the same color teeth.
It's a start.

Thanks Roy,
Do you happen to have any pics of electrics?
Regarding swampy, I was in fact referring to electrics. The most memorable
electric sound I have ever heard was TJW doing a TV solo concert here in Oz
many years ago. I can't remember anything about it except the sound of his
electric guitar, which was a strat.
A 63 strat and a 64 blackface ..... dream on......

all too low-volume. Have you noticed that? What are they trying to
