I'm looking for a clean sounding speaker capable of handling 100 watts that
will fit into a Yamaha G100 112 combo. I'm not sure a JBL or EV will fit in
the cabinet. Looking at New Sensor's and Mojo's sites, there's not an
Emminence listed that'll handle that kind of power though Evans and Raezer
use high powered emminence speakers so I know they're around somewhere!

At any rate, Celestion makes a G12-100 (100 watt) speaker. Has anyone tried
it for clean jazz tones ? I wonder if it's similar to Boogie's Black Shadow
Celestion 90 which sounds very good for jazz?

I have one of these in my Fender Deluxe 90 (stock), and I use it for jazz.
Very nice tight bass, sweet tone. If I ever sell this amp, I'll want to
keep the speaker. ;-) Highly recommended.

Which one? The Mesa/Celestion 90 or the G12-100 ?

Thanks,

I own both of those speakers and would recommend the Mesa Black Shadow 90
over the Celestion g12h-100 for any type of music. The Boogie has a more
pleasant response curve to me. I don't really want to get into analyzing
it, but I know I like the 90 more.......You don't have many choices other
than new EVM's, old JBL d120's, old EV SRO, new Fane , and Emminence does
make 100 watters and many other much higher wattage speakers. Keep in mind
Emminence makes loads of PA spekaers for BagEnd, PAS, Eastern Acoustic
,etc. I don't have one handy but the parts Express catalogs always have
about 20 Emminence speakers in them. Good luck

I have a Celestion G12 in my Trace Elliot amp, and to me it can sound a bit muddy.
Then again, it could be the way the amp is voiced. Check out www.webervst.com for
a pretty wide range of speakers. They're supposed to be pretty nice speakers and
reasonably priced.

You mention SRO's---there are several types of those. I bought an SRO 12L
(the "L" is the difference) and it seems very good as well.
It's rated at 100 watts, has a huge ceramic magnet (like the EVM's), and a
white cast frame (like alnico SRO's). The real wierd thing is the metal dust
cap.

Anyone out here ever see an EV with a metal dust cap before? It's satin
black on the front, but you can see the shiny metal side thru the magnet
vent.

I used to have EV SRO's in my BF Twin Reverb - almost doubled the weight of
the amp with the huge magnets jutting out the back - were much cleaner and
tighter sounding than the stock Fender speakers which would also blow on a
regular basis - never had any problems with the SRO's blowing - don't recall
whether the SRO's had aluminum dustcaps - the SRO's are some of the finest
speakers you can get - if you don't mind the huge magnets - I got mine new
in the mid-'70's

Has anyone tried the E-V Force 12"? They are rated at 150 rms I believe
and are made for guitar.I have used a Force 10" in my Pignose G40V
combo and it made a huge difference.Much punchier/way less flab in the
low end.JBL also makes a cheaper model of 12" guitar speaker but I
can't remember the model name.Another company to check out is Image
communications. No website but their phone # is 800-552-1639.They
probably have the best prices on Eminence and also carry
Selenium,P.Audio,E-V,etc.Also,MCM Electronics.Carvin also carries a
12"that some people really like.I assume it's probably made by Eminence.

Yes, for a while EV was making the the EVM's with aluminum centerdomes.
I think I've even got a spec sheet squirreled away somewhere with a
picture of it to prove it. I don't think they made 'em for very long,
because I've never actually seen one, and I've been around the block a
few times. I think this occurred near the beginning of the EVM series
life, i.e., early 70's. Maybe the market response was not very good and
they dropped them quickly!

I ended up with a Mesa/Celestion Black Shadow 90. It sounds very good. Not
as pristine as an EV but I'm not sure an EV would have fit in the cabinet
due to the proximity of the reverb tank and the cooling fins on the power
amp.
