Has anyone heard Steve Vai's collaboration with Indian musician Surinder
Sandhu?
Unusually and very rare Vai plays a l-o-n-g acoustic guitar solo (firstly
duets with a indian sarode, like a indian lute guitar), a ripping solo on
his trusted jem, sitar guitar and even a Pat Metheny Jazz guitar!!!
Man its awesum, its like the very best of John Mclaughlins Shakti/Mahavishnu
Orchestra but with a much bigger instrumentation.
Its got a about 30 musicians (4 guitarists), Steve being the main soloist,
with Saxophonists Andy Sheppard (of Carla Bley, George Russell fame) and
George Brooks + many Indian solosts,
with The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and many Indian and Jazz
Musicians.
Anyone heard it, got any reviewS?
you can hear clips at www.surindersandhu.com
you guys gotto check this out and dont forget where you heard about it

Sounds cool so far - I've always wanted to hear Vai in a context like this,
or in some kind of Mahavishnu-type thing where he's not the whole show and he's
being pushed by the other musicians. And, where he's _improvising_! This sounds
like just the ticket.

yeh thats what i was looking for, its just so interesting when these
incredible virtuoso players get pushed to doing something out of there own
form.
i love the record, it easily stands up there with mahavishnu, in my opinion
much more musical and interesting, theres like more things happening.
i think vai on this record proves he is a Guitar God full stop, not just the
greasy kid god.
Get it QUICK, RUN DONT WALK!

Can't find the title, but the leader's name is Surinder Sandhu and his
website, where you can hear clips and by the CD, is here:
http://www.saurang.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/
I think it's just called the SauRang Orchestra or something.
you can get it only from www.surindersandhu.com
it wont be released in usa for about another 5 months!
