More puzzling the 'reasoning' behind the design features rarely if
ever seems to translate to what I hear.
Am I in a minority or do you think signature models have real
advantages to offer over the standard model.

Some of the signature models are true duplicates of the way a particular
player has his guitar set up, but most are not. Like the Hendrix
Stratocaster. It has very little resemblance to Jimmi's guitars. Other
signature models are only signed by the musician because they get payed to
endorse them for a particular company. As far as I am conncerned Signature
Models are rip offs unless you got one with the real signature of the
performer and you feel that you must have it.
Buying a guitar that is set up like you're favorite player's is not going
to make you sound like that player.

That's true in some cases and with "student" guitars such as Epiphone,
you're not getting the same guitar the artist played anyway. However, with
the (Japanese) Ibanez Pat Metheny and George Benson guitars, you're getting
a guitar endowed with the philosophy of the player and may derive some
benefits from those guitars if you're playing style or situation is similar
to the artists.

I bought my Gibson Tal Farlow five years ago, not because of Tal Farlow,
but because it was a beautiful instrument, had been sitting in the
showroom for a year, and I got a great deal.
As much as I like and respect Tal's playing, his name on the instrument
was NOT a motivating factor in my purchase.

Yes, the L5 is a very good beginners guitar, but I prefer my Harmony
Vibra-Jet "juvenal" signature model for professional work. Unfortunately,
my signature is wearing off of the pickguard. Is their a Crayola that wears
longer than yellowish-green?
