Just got a what I think is a Polytone MiniBrute II in a trade for a
Peavey amp. It doesn't say clearly on the amp which it is. It
has a 12 inch speaker, and the following controls: Volume (and a
concentric distortion knob), Bass, Treble, and Reverb. There are two
inputs, as well as a 3 position toggle for Bright/Dark.
On the back, there are 3 jacks: Main Output, Ext. Speaker, and
Footswitch. There is no Effects Loop.
Any idea which Polytone this is? The serial number on the back is
17100, which, I guess puts this in the 1977 production year, although
I am basing this on an old RMMGJ post about Polytone numbers.

I need to replace the speaker in this, because although the one in it
sounds OK at low to moderate volumes, at higher volumes it farts out
on Eb, E, and F. I don't think this is the original speaker,
because in the center it says MTX. I saw that someone on RMMGJ used
a Weber Chicago 12 speaker in these to good results. Can anyone
suggest any other speaker replacements? I think these have to be 4
Ohm.
Thanks for any help.
Alex Pechenik.
It is the picture, or the 'III' seems to be slightly different from
the I, II and IV on this one: http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd314/apechenik/P1000442.jpg
See you on JBGI
Pierre
Hmm.. They are close cosmetically, but are different amps. The
Minibrute III in http://music.jondreyer.com/polytone/index.html has a
15 inch speaker, and mine is a 12 incher. Mine also has OD, Reverb,
and a footswitch jack. Thanks, Pierre.
Need to make a JBGI submission....

I owned quite a few PT's over the last 10 years and I found that the
same model name might have different features depending on the year.
That is, a models of the same name were not consistent. Your pics
looks familiar and I believe you are right - 70's from the vinyl
covering and probably a MBII.
Now can anyone suggest a speaker, or should I just get the Weber
Chicago (ceramic)?

Thanks, Bill.
Why not? Or call Weber and see what he thinks. Used to be you could
get him on the phone and ask questions like I have this amp, which of
your speakers woudl be a good fit?

I think I settled down on the Weber 4 Ohm California 12 Ceramic. It
looks like the California is supposed to be the cleanest sounding
speaker out of their high power speakers. Looks like I have to get
the ceramic one, as I don't think the Alnico California will fit in
the Polytone with that huge magnet. I'd gladly post a review, but I
don't think it would be worth much, since this is my first time
changing speakers.
I am amazed at how much I like the MB2. I've been using tube amps
for the past 5 years, after using cheapo solid state amps when I
started to play. The tube amps I used were a Pro Jr., then a
Classic 30, and then a Peavey Valveking (with 6L6's). The MB2 kills
all those for jazz sound. Just murders them completely.
I am also embarassed to say that I kinda like the Polytone distortion
circuit, for some kind of punk rock sound. Definitely not for a
jazz fusion sound. Since I am seriously studying jazz with any free
time I have, I don't spend any time playing other styles of music, let
alone punk rock.... Also, my multi-effect pedal (Digi RP-350)
sounds much better and consistent between different patches on the
Polytone than either the Classic 30 or the Valveking. This amp
really is making me happy.
If anyone is interested in a comparison of the Peavey Classic 30 vs.
the Peavey Valveking, I'd be glad to post it.
