Hey all,
I've put my Cort Joe Beck Alto Guitar on e-bay. Anyone interested,
feel free to check it out. I've also listed my 1937 Kay Upright bass
and some other guitars and equipment.

whats the tuning on this guitar??

Essentially it is tuned down a 5th from the standard guitar (A to A),
but strings 3 and 4 are just tuned up an octave so it is doesn't sound
muddy. The sixth string is an A tuned down like the A on an electric
bass. The fifth string is tuned to a D on a bass. The fourth string
is a G. The third is a C. The second is an E and the first is an A.
GHS makes a set of strings that work for this guitar. The sixth is
an .080 gauge flat wound (bass string). The fifth is a .060 gage flat
wound. The fourth string is a .022 round wound string. The Third is
a .016 unwound string. The second is a round wound .026 and the
first is an unwound .018. The high notes are in the middle now
(because they are tuned up an octave. Essentially you get very
pianistic sounding chords with standard voicing. You can probably
find some of Joe's sound clips on line playing one of these.

Joe Beck and Jimmy Bruno have a very nice CD called Polarity, where
Joe plays that guitar exlusively.
Might be some sound clips at Amazon .co or CD Baby.

Yeah, they both play great, but Jimmy is pretty well the feature for heads and solos, and he's playing really beautifully on there!

I think that's what made it such a great album: they were both able to focus on what they did best. Joe was a wonderful accompanist able to build a great groove and lay down some wonderful harmonies. I was a real fan but he always sounded his best to me when he was building the foundation for someone else to solo on. He played the exact same roll for Ali Ryerson, also on the Alto guitar, on one of my favorite albums of the era.

Thanks for calling my attention to the 'Polarity" album, Jim. I'll be
looking for it.
