It's not a pedal, but I like the Comp 16, I think it's made by
Presonis.

Forgot to mention that the Barber has a blend knob. My buddy loves it, and
I've been waiting for him to get another in the store so I can grab one.

Check this out -

http://www.fmraudio.com/arc.htm

This is from the people who make the RNC
("Really Nice Compressor"), which is probably
the best $200 squeezer on the planet. (Many
bassists swear by the RNC, although you have
to use it in an effects loop; it's not designed
to operate at instrument levels.) The ARC
will take a guitar direct...it's a stompbox.

Ii haven't heard the ARC, and don't know
anything about it other than what's on the
site. (It's new.) However, the fact that it's
designed by Mark McQuilken is good
enough for me. I've been selling the RNC
for years, and *not once* have I ever heard
anything negative about it from anyone I've
sold it to. I currently stock the RNC and
the RNLA; I'm thinkin' hard about laying
in some ARCs. ;-)

I have the demter, 2 knobs, but I have never been able to figure out exactly
what it does with a jazz guitar stuck into it? I could use some help here,
thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, I read your posting a few minutes after I ordered the
Keeley. Any thoughts on the keeley?

All very interesting, I'll have to give the whole compressor idea some
thought. I just started using reverb a few months ago. Ha ha -
radical, I know.

And if you do a GIS for Keeley you get a whole different kind of
compression....whoa. More of a NSFW compression.

Just checking my old studio compressor and its got controls for gate,
threshold, ratio, attack and release as well as input and output levels.
Compressors are very level dependent so I'd be wary of any which didn't
allow you to set both the input and output levels, depending on where in the
signal chain you site it. Software compressors now are much more
sophisticated allowing multiband compression and infinitely variable 'soft
knee' curves. I'd be tempted to raid a local studio to find what they're
currently using for that genre.
