Im looking at a 2006 es-175 SP (single pup) on line for what seems like a
good price ($2400) compared to the 2 pup 175s, but Im wondering if this
guitar is substantially different from the es-165s. There are a couple
cosmetic differences (tuners, chrome vs gold hardware), but Im wondering if
the differences go any deeper. If not, the 165s are a lot cheaper and would
be the way to go.

Anyone familiar with the 175SPs? They were made for just a few years

thanks,
steve

Of course I mean the early 165s with the installed humbucker, not the
floater.

Different humbuckers - 490 series on the 165s and '57 Classic on 90's
175s and later;

I have one and the label says ES175, even though it is clearly an
ES165 (it has Herb's name on the headstock, etc.). I have also owned a
number of ES175's and I am certain they are the same guitar other than
cosmetics and hardware. I actually really like the 490 series pickup
in the ES165. I bought a classic '57, thinking that I might try it in
the ES165, but I decided not to do it because the 490 sounds great.

I agree, the 490 sounds better than the classic '57.

you also reminded me of something. The first ES-135 I bought was
labeled inside as an ES-175 - handwritten on the label.

That's funny. A friend of mine has a Norlin-era ES335 that says
"L5CES" on the label.

I can't tell any difference, other than the pickup(s). I've had my
ES165 for years, and I always refer to it as a 175. Mine's pretty beat
up from hanging in Sam Ash for about a year, but it's a great guitar.
The 165 sounds a lot like an L4CES, too.

Yo Greg....can u say more about the 490? I been really liking the
classic 57s in my guitars, but how does the 490 differ? Gibson says it
has more 'upper mids' but is it that obvious? I hear some folks say
its brighter too...ur thoughts?

The 490 sounds great on the 165. I have classic 57s in my L5 and L4.
The 490 does have more upper mids, for sure. It's a more modern sound,
if that helps at all. I don't hear the 490 as a bright pickup in the
165.

When I replaced the 490 in my 165 with a 57 classic it was too bright
for me.
The 165 is quite bright acoustically.
The 490 seems to mellow it out a bit and I feel it's a better pickup for
this guitar. So I put it back in.
