Hey Gang,
My new column is up on All About Jazz. A discussion of Joe
Henderson's recording of "Blue Bossa". The new installment in my
quest to be the Sister Wendy of jazz! Let me know what you think!
Victor
You gave us a nice discussion on the Blue Bossa recording , Vic.
I'm not sure I agree about the unsung or second echelon nature of
Henderson's career though. Aside from his prodigious output as a leader he
was included on several classic sessions like The Real McCoy [Tyner], Red
Clay [Hubbard], Song For My Father [Silver], The Sidewinder [Morgan], The
Prisoner [Hancock]. It's a long list. He also was in Miles band off and on
in the 60's. Joe was fortunate to have a long and productive career. Some
of his greatest success artistically and commercially came late in his life
with the release of So Near So Far, Lush Life and Double Rainbow on Verve.
These albums are modern classics.
I was lucky enough to see him perform in 1996. Even though he did not appear
to be in good health he played great. He lived up to his legendary status.
When he died last year we lost one of the all time greats.

Joe,
Plus "Mirror, Mirror" with Chick Corea which is one of my faves.
Speaking of Red Clay, I just picked up a new reissue of that on CD
which has an extra live track of Red Clay with George Benson on it!
What an amazing album.
