I have two Epi JPs. The first is a sunburst with an S series number.
It's a good guitar. The second is a natural finish with a U series
number. This is a seriously good guitar. The finish is perfect but
more importantly so is the playability and the sound. I believe
Epiphone had improved the pickups by the time I bought the blonde one.
In many ways I prefer it to my GibsonTal Farlow although overall that
just, but only just, has the edge.
I do think that the Epis vary quite a bit as to a lesser extent do the
Gibsons. I would always play one before buying.

Mine is like yours, natural finish with a U series number.Fantastic
playability and sound.

I didn't know there was a second Korean factory. I've never heard anything
negative about samick instruments. Was the second plant opened in response
to greater demand? Any other details?
I've had students who played samicks. They are really good quality
instruments. ...joe

Many Epiphones ( not sure about the Joe Pass ) also carry a 'P' suffix
which for the past 30 years has indicated origins in the Peerless
factory

Just wanted to add my 2 cents...
Thanks for the information... mine has an "S". Love the guitar. It's a
blond, and you know what they say about "Gentlemen preferring...".
Anyway... love my Epi. I have 20+ guitars. Not much in the way of
vintage... I'm too cheap. But of the players, the Epi really stands
out. And the price was right... $400. It sounds decent unplugged and
has (to my ears) a nice "woody" tone.
Again, thanks for the info and keep on pickin'...

Very nice! But when you say
> Joe and Ella did an album together called Alone Together
, I don愒 know anything of that album ...
The three original albums (73, 76 and 86) were called "Take Love Easy",
"Again" and "Easy Living". Two that came out later were called
"Sophisticated Lady" and "Speak Love". Jim Hall and Ron Carter had an
ablbum called "Alone Together", maybe that愀 what you were thinking of
...
Sorry but there is so much misinformation on the 慨et, just thought I
wanted to do something about it where I could ...
