Jim Hall's words: "I used a Gibson, I actually remember the number, it
was a GA50. I love the sound of tube amps in general. I don't know, I
may have been able to get used to a Fender but there was something
about the subtlety of that amp that I liked. I liked the way it
looked, like an old radio."
Jim used this amp for several years, but it eventually became too
fragile to take on the road. Since then he's been trying to get as
close to the sound of the GA50 as possible.
I heard him play through that amp at The Clifton Tap Room in NJ many years
ago. That thing had unbelievable sustain.

i have one. it has the best sound but like Jim said "fragile" and not
road worthy at all
The one he plays on that old film (Legends of Jazz Guitar video) looks like
a small sideboard!

I've often wondered why no one makes a clone of that amp, given its
place in the history of jazz guitar. I've seen the schematic and it's
not complicated at all. It was a cathode bias power section IIRC. Are
there other old Gibson amps that come close in tone? Also, I believe
Barney Kessel may have played one of the old Gibson amps in the late
'50's, though not sure which one.

In this case one's an 8 and ones a 12 so the 8 probably helps out with
the highs.

Looks like it's been through a war (and lost), but....

It is is great amp. It is the sound most players want; a great
midrange. Like I said I own one. I used to play it a lot. She like a
little old lady, very fragile. You are scared if you bump into her she
might die! That is why it is the closet today.
I was interested in this amp at one time. I played it at a local
shop. It is no GA-50 but a great amp just the same:
