Okay, since it's Mozart's birtday today, I'd like to pose this
hypothetical question to the newsgroup. If Mozart has been
reincarnated as a 20th Century guitarist, who would he be
reincarnated as? Make your guesses and give your reasons.

I heard that when they finally located Mozarts coffin in the potter's feild to
give it a proper resting place they opend it up to make sure it was really
Mozart. When they peered inside they were shocked to see Mozart sitting in the
coffin and erasing music!!! They said "what are you doing Wolfgang!!!!!" to
which Mozart replied "why I'm decomposing".

But is Hendrix is the re-incarnation of Mozart, who is the
reincarnation of Salieri? Noel Redding? or maybe Barney
Kessel?

I know this will sound like heresy, but there is, in my opinion, no
guitarist of the 20th century whose natural talent came close to that
of Mozart's. His gifts and abilities were truly staggering.

So, my guess is "nobody".

It's an odd question, but after a few minutes of pondering I'd say
Lenny Breau. Consider a few parallels. Both came from families of
professional musicians - Lenny's parents did a country act, and
Mozart's dad and sibs were doing the European bag of the era, playing
and teaching. Both started very young. Both were amazingly fast
learners and did things that were said to be impossible, whether real
or legend. Young Mozart came home after hearing an opera with his dad,
asked to be taken back the next night, then came home and wrote it out
completely by memory. Breau supposedly learned to play the
double-tracked Les Paul stuff in real time because he didn't know it
was tracked (I know, this rumor has been said about several people).
Both had erratic personalities and substance abuse problems that
helped to do them in, although Breau's death was under suspicious
circumstances and was rumored to be a murder. Both died young.

Other possibilities: Django Reinhardt, Jaco Pastorius (even though he
played bass guitar)

Mark Plancke. I understand that Mozart died too early to get in enough

Good response. It's a thought provoking question, something which seems to be getting rare around here (No disrespect to the
"regulars", there just seems to be some, uh, less than insightful posts cropping up).

I've always thought that Jaco was one of the only guys who should be placed in the Mozart/Bird category. Just completely came
out of nowhere and reinvented music. Hendrix, too.

But I would suggest, maybe, Wes. The light and grace of Mozart, the sunny disposition found in so much of Wolfy's music, the
effortlessness exhibited - all characteristics of Wes, as well.

As for the comment about Stravinsky - I think Wolfy might take some time to get up to speed, but I'm pretty sure he'd end up
digging Igor.

Nah, the reincarnation of Salieri would be Kenny G.

But the man who played the tin man IS dead - his name was Jack Haley,

Buddy Ebsen was originally supposed to play the tin man, but was
