Does anyone here have on-the-gig experience with an Evans AE-100 or AE-150
amp? I like the size and weight of the AE-100, but I have some reservations
about using an 8" speaker by itself. Thanks in advance.

The 8" speaker probably isn't a problem, but the AE 100's generally low
power will probably compromise your volume. I've got a Raezer's Edge ONE 8
that I use with a Clarus amp, which is somewhere just North of 100 watts
into 8 ohms. It works really well for big band rehearsal, but the group
tends to play a little louder in performance, such that I've been unable to
turn up the volume enough to solo and be heard over the band playing fff in
unison. That's loud! If you don't play in that kind of situation, you might
be ok. BTW, within the amp's capacity, from around 20' away it's difficult
to distinguish the ONE 8 from a Stealth 12. Really!

If you read between the lines of the JJG review of the AE100 (all the
reviews are glowing, so you'll have to read carefully) you'll see that the
reviewer greatly preferred the AE100 with its expensive extension speaker. I
suspect that's because the added power from drop in resistance allowed the
amp to open up a little, plus an extra speaker always pleases the ear
(better dispersion, I believe).

My favorite small, light weight rig is a Clarus amp with a Stealth 10 cab.
Still, I normally use a Twin 8 on big band gigs, just in case the band gets
carried away and plays really, really loud.
