Just wondering...for those of us with Fender acoustics, which strings do you
use?

I have a DG20S and use either Ernie Ball lights or D'Addario lights. I am a
big time strummer who is getting into fingerpicking. I've tried all sorts of
other strings, with some sounding fine and others not. What have you liked
on your guitar?

Fender DG22S here, I prefer the John Pearse Slightly Lights (developed for
James Taylor!). They are by far the best I've tried. I hated the Martin
Marquis I tried. For cheap, the Fender Lights aren't too bad.

Number one, if you're playing a Fender acoustic, you can't be too concerned
about tone OR playability. Trade it in for a decent guitar before you worry
about what strings to put on it.

How helpful is this?

William...regardless of whether a guitar fits your minimum standards for
snob appeal, it can probably benefit from a decent pair of strings. Fenders
aren't my personal first choice in acoustic guitars, but I've played several
that decent tone and I've played quite a few that had excellent playability.
Since your reaction was to the brand name rather than any description of the
guitar, your opinions on tone and playability seem a little suspect, IMHO.

Sheesh

Dominic, my preference for acoustic strings at the moment is John Pearce
80/20's. I doubt that the brand of guitar is as important to string choice
as the style of guitar and the wood in the top...my axe is a Taylor Grand
Concert size with a spruce top. My guess is that your Fender is a
Dreadnought with either a spruce or plywood top. The larger size of the box
might lead you to prefer brighter strings...phosphor bronze might be a
better choice.

A friend of mine had a Fender acoustic which sounded pretty ordinary. I
did three things: a) took the soundhole out to the first rosette
diameter (enlarged it by 1/2 an inch) b) sorted the action c) fitted a
set of D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Light strings - 12s. The result was
stunningly good (unexpectedly - I was repairing it after he had cut bits
out round the soundhole for a pickup) and he promptly abandoned his
Simon & Patrick and started playing the old Fender. It has the most
incredible volume and sustain with the enlarged sound hole. When he
restrung it, he bought D'Addario strings again and told me he was going
to stick with this set in future.

I personally wouldn't trade my Fender DG22S for any Martin I have played, nor
Ovation, nor the $1700 Collings I tooled with early last week. My DG22S has
the most volume, balanced tone, and is the best looking guitar I found in it's
class. For volume, the only thing I have ever found that was close to it was a
big Guild like a D-20. Yeah, if you want a finger picking guitar, it is a
little big and boomy, but it does fantasically well compared to anything else
in it's class, especially for the price.

To Blindly say that because we choose to own Fender Acoustics is the equivolent
of my saying you resemble a horses ass. I'll give you the benifit of the doubt
on this one, but more statements like that and my opinion of your thoughts will
revert to my previous blind statement.

I don't think this is a very constructive attitude.

I have a Fender , it sounds very good for it's cost , and much better
than some much more expensive guitars I have used.
True it's a beater, but it sounds good enough that other people who
play feel moved to comment favourably.

I care what my guitars sound like whether they cost 10 quid or a
thousand.

FWIW I use ' Dead 'arrio Custom Lights and I find that the Fender
copes very well with the slight bass reduction.

I have tried Ernie Ball, RotoSound , Redwings and several others I
can't remember now , and I find the Custom Lights give me the tone and
balance I like, and I can get them most places, unlike Elixers.

There is too much snob bitching goes on as it is for me to pass your
comment by, sorry.

William,

What was that line? Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to
speak and remove all doubt? I think that was it. It's a little late for you, I
see...
My DG21S has a very decent tone and as good an action as any of the dozens
of guitars I auditioned. I'm thinking you got a less than perfect example when
you formed your opinion. I've got light 80-20s on it right now. It rings for
quite a while when I set it back on the stand...

Now now...I've got a late 1970s Fender acoustic that's not that bad, and
it's perfect for taking to the beach or camping. Why not have good
strings on it to boot? Not everybody can own a Breedlove, but anyone can
buy Elixers if they want to.

They just sound the best to me...bright and easily playable, especially the
Ernie Balls. Crappy is a strong word, but I didn't necessarily like the
John Pearse strings. They sounded a little dead and I had a string break on
me a day after putting it on....perhaps I got an old set.

I've come to find that Martin srtings do me best. I like to use the light
gauge. But I found that although harder to handle, a good 13 gauge can get
the sound you want from an acoustic.
