Art Work - Complete except for copyright info
Liner notes - Complete except for copyright info
Masters - currently reside with me.
number of contributors - 87, I think.
Copyright Permissions - Non-HFA, mostly done, $500 spent. HFA
permissions, on hold. There are 55 cover tunes, 38 are HFA tunes. We're
looking at about $3K for copyright permissions.
Replication - waiting for copyright docs and $$$$. Quote, last year, was
$5250 minus sales tax, for 500 sets, 7 CD set, 131 tracks.
Finacials - $500 in the hole, no backer
The team currently consists of:
Me - spiritual adviser/whipping post
Richard Brooker - artwork
Jennifer Wang - liner notes
Harold Hedberg - Copyrights

I thought that the participants in this (the members submitting the
non-original copyrighted music) were to pay for *all* coyright
issues...and yet you mention:
"We're looking at about $3K for copyright permissions."
Have these monies not been collected?
Can you elaborate briefly on this?

Steve also mentioned something about sales tax on the CD purchase from
a replicator.
I would be happy to lend my "Guitar Odyssey" business (officially
licensed in Oregon as a re-seller) to procure the CDs without having to
pay sales tax.
I don't have the time to deal with any other aspect of this, such as
money-collection or retail distribution, but I can at least make sure
that no sales tax would be paid on the $5K plus number.
BTW, with CD sales down, there might be a pleasant surprise with a
better price from a replicator...folks are scrambling for business in
the CD manufacturing world.
The plant where I had my last run of "What Tomorrow Brings"
manufactured is out-of-business.

No money has been collected; I'll address the rest in the next post. The
$500 came from Harold and I'd like to make sure he gets it back. That's
the reason I told him to hold off on HFA tunes for now.

Earlier this year I was intending to work with Oasis for my current
project. I started realizing their communcation had turned crappy
compared to what I'd been used to, and then saw that they were intending
to charge sales tax on a product for which the destination was a
friggin' record label. Next I discovered they'd been purchased by
DiscMakers.
I started looking around and right now our CD is being replicated and
packaged by Cravedog in Portland OR. Pricing was more than cometitive,
communication has been near instantaneous, and they can tell the
difference between a standard taxable retail sale and a manufacturing
run for a record label. So far working with them has been an absolute
pleasure.
I've been communicating with Rob Simonsen there, and he has been stellar
at every step.

Thanks Larry, I'll keep that in mind. You should consider that you might
become the "entity" responsible for copyright issues, as the business
placing the order. :-)

Excellent info to have...I'll be re-ordering two of my titles
