Red "but I wish I had more" in Berea
Stage guitars:
Larrivee OM-03W, with LR Baggs RT pickup with Micro-EQ installed after
purchase.
This is the best ensemble instrument I've ever owned, and works beautifully as
a solo instrument, as well. Great neck, beautifully figured walnut back and
sides, nice silked top, extraordinary volume and projection. The Micro-EQ is
an onboard preamp with tonal controls that allows me to tweak my stage sound
precisely.
Martin 000-42 copy made by Scott Baxendale, also with LR Baggs RT pickup with
Micro-EQ. My long time main axe, now largely supplanted by the Larrivee, but
still the finest-sounding solo instrument I have.
Tacoma EM-9, with LR Baggs RT pickup with Micro-EQ. I started off with the
Tacoma Tone Bar pickup in this one, but decided I didn't care for the amplified
tone that much.
So I corrected that....
This is the liveliest fingerstyle guitar I own - it's a very modern design,
comparable to Goodalls and Breedloves in terms of touch sensitivity, if not in
materials, fit or finish. But it's an exceptional value at the price, which is
about $600 or less from First Quality and Elderly.
Tacoma Papoose "travel guitar." I put that in quotes, as I don't consider it a
travel guitar so much as I do an Americanized, steel-string requinto, the
Mexican miniature guitar that served as the Papoose's inspiration. It's tuned
A to A, and is a whole different thing than just a "little guitar."
Teisco Del Ray short scale electric bass guitar. An oddball Japanese import
from the mid-Sixties, this instrument features a body that was a copy of the
Rickenbacker "Tulip" body style and a neck that's a direct ripoff of the Fender
Strat. It plays well and sounds amazingly good, however. With its narrow neck
and short scale, it's a very comfortable instrument for guitar players to pick
up and use.
Deering "Boston" model guitar-banjo. What a killer instrument. Great,
straight neck, 26 inch scale.
This instrument, and the more expensive version with the Mastertone pot, are
just about the finest guitar-banjos ever built. The folks at Deering sat down
and figured out some of the engineering problems that have plagued
guitar-banjos since the beginning, and the result is a superbly playable,
wonderful instrument.
Wonderful, that is, if you like the sound of banjos.....
I have a couple of more banjos, including a Mastertone mandolin-banjo and a
five string, but I'll spare you the details. And I'm going to skip the
mandolins and mountain dulcimers, or we'd be here all day.
Wade Hampton Miller
Make it a great day!!!

Martin D40DM (Don Mclean) Looks great feels great and has it's own great
sound.
Martin HD28 '96 Blew me away when I bought it and still does. Had to
choose recently whether to part with this or my Taylor 812 '89. Was a
hard decision as I actually prefer smaller bodied guitars. still miss
the Taylor but am glad I kept the Martin. Not bad to be able to refer to
this as my cheap Martin!!!!!
Taylor 314CE Just got this from Buffalo Brothers. Not as good a sound as
any of the Martin's or the 812 but at the price a great gigging guitar
especially as it has the Fishman Prefix Blender system installed. I love
the convenience of controls on the guitar.

I got the bug to build a guitar and went to Nazareth, PA to take the Martin
factory tour. Then I visited the Guitarmaker's Connection store for a
Martin kit. Frank Finnochio helped me select parts off the rack, the same
parts that are used in the factory. He even let me go through the abalone
and select a nicely matched set for the 45-style snowflake fingerboard and
bridge inlay. I got a torch inlay for the headstock and ebony tuner buttons
from other sources.
I built it in the winter of '91-'92, taking about 4 months of evenings and
weekends. The hardest part was getting the finish just right - lots of
sanding and spraying and polishing and rubbing. I listened to lots of good
music as I was building, with the hope that the wood might get an idea of
the kind of tunes I like.
My guitar turned out pretty well; I've had enough compliments on it to think
that at least some are sincere. It's not perfect - the neck is a little,
well, clubby, and the lacquer has cracked some. One winter my family and I
were in "reduced circumstances" and had to heat with wood. That's when I
learned about the importance of keeping a humidifier in a guitar. I also
learned how to repair a crack in a soundboard.
So, it's a little homely but it sounds good, it looks well-used and
therefore happy, and every time I pick it up to play I smile a little
because I built it myself. Perhaps my son and his kids will play it in
years to come.

Breedlove C-1, #90-001. I don't play this guitar anymore, but it is the
first guitar that the Breedlove boys ever built. Other than being a very
nice guitar, it might be worth something, someday.
One brand spankin' new custom modified Bill Tippin OMT-Cutaway. This
guitar is quite possibly the most perfect guitar for ME that I have ever
touched. El McMeen just showed up at my house with his two-week old custom

Great story, Rich. <sigh> wish I had the woodworking skills ...
Current guitar inventory includes (in order of acquisition):
-1966 Martin D-35 spuce/Braz. rosewood (obtained in college and NEVER
to be parted with)
-1985 Taylor 555 12-string spruce/mahogany
-1995 Goodall spruce/rosewood Grand Concert cutaway
-1998 Lowden F23 cedar/walnut (mini-jumbo size)
Guitars "on order" so to speak:
-1999 (presumably) Larrivee Parlour (maybe I'll get the first Larrivee
Parlour of the new millennium!)
-"recent" Epiphone Emperor single cutaway (I know Jack Sh*t about
electric guitars, but I'm about to enter the amplified archtop world
via a recent highest bid on eBay...)
That's not to mention the banjos, bouzoukis, bodhrans, dulcimers
(mountain and hammered), whistes, autoharp, etc., etc. lying around.

I know I'm off topic with the electrics but I see some others have as
well.
Fender Telecaster. (My baby) Bought it new in 1967. Was blonde, now
natural, very lovely ash with a burl grain pattern, flame maple neck/
fingerboard, with those dark stains from use going from 1st to 12th
frets. Added Shaller bridge, Mighty Mite neck pickup and removed a
few windings from it so the 2 pickups are perfectly balanced, 5 way
switch (Off, neck with highs rolled off, neck natural, Neck+bridge,
bridge), pickups are potted eliminating that Tele bridge pickup squeal
feedback, electronics cavities are shielded. Looks/plays/sounds
great! Always my first guitar off the rack when I'm playing an
important date where I need a versatile guitar.
'80's Japanese Stratocaster with Fender Rose. SD Quarter-Pounder
bridge pickup. This the only guitar I own that I'm not very attached
to. My wife says I can replace it soon. I'll probably wind up with a
flame-maple/basswood or ash Tom Anderson or Zion with a HSH pickup
arrangement and advanced switching (split & S/P options).
'93 Taylor Dan Crary Signature dreadnaught with a Truetone M7 system
installed after purchase. Power, sustain, strong overtones, great
balance; a beautiful tone both acoustic and amplified.
'50s Regal acoustic archtop. When my Dad passed away, I went to start
cleaning up his house, opened a closet door and there was my Mom's
(passed away 2 yrs earlier) archtop that I learned to play my first
chords on. What a mess... cleaned it up, put on some medium phosphor
bronze and WOW. Great tone, power, sustain, strong overtones.
'68 L5CES archtop. Venitian cutaway. Killer looks/amplified tone,
Very good acoustic qualities with strong overtones. Plays like a
dream. The The ultimate for the big-band shows I do. I'm toying
with the idea of coil-splitting... I grew up playing Fender.

Best sound to my ear is the Koa Larrivee. Wonderful sustain, great note
seperation, good fundementals with wonderful overtones. Visually, it's the darkest
koa I've seen and while not the most flamed, it has excellent figure. The flamed
curly maple binding really sets off the looks of this guitar. The abalone purfling
adds a beautiful accent to the koa top.
All the rest are great guitars and still make it into my hands as often as I have
time.

There IS a trend!
In order to modify that trend, I guess I should get a dreadnaught in
Rosewood made by a maker not represented in the list.
Hmmmm.......
Cheers,

Currently investigating getting a small bodied instrument made - no

Wow, Julian, you move fast! Who is Peter Abnett? Where can I read
about his guitars? What happened to Brook? And why can't I stop asking
all these questions... ?
Best wishes,

1999 Parker Fly Supreme
Bought the Parker so I would never have to worry about my beautiful
acoustics when playing out. If you have never played the Parker, give
it a try...I was impressed and oh yes put a POD in line with your
favorite amp.

Okay, I'll bite. I'm trying to get out of this lurking mode that I've
been in on this group since '95 anyway.
Acoustic Steel-string:
1997 Webber RB Cedar/Extra-Figured Walnut w/Highlander - WOW!
1999 Bourgeios JR-A (ANYBODY see the thread?)
1991 Taylor 812c w/factory pickup - Fishman? (first real acoustic)
1992?(I think, not with me at the moment) Taylor LKSM-12
Others:
1998 Contreras II C4-S (classical)
1989 Gibson L4-CES
(A few electrics that rarely get played (although I do have a nice
re-issue Fender Japanese Tele thinline))
Looking:
Maybe one of those Parlor guitars for the office. <<You know, from
Olson :)

Tacoma C1C Chief(my current favorite)
An old (30 year-old) Yairi classical I've had since I was 10
Some Takamine I bought about 10 years ago that I don't like anymore.
A Seagull Grand will be joining the harem soon.
-Mav
Morris in Maryland
I've owned many acoustics over the years but presently only have two :
A Seagull S6 Cedar which has one of the best tones I've ever heard.
Not a T.P.O.S. and an old Ovation/Applause a truely original T.P.O.S.
which I use exclusively for open tunings and some slide work.
Nothing fancy but they work for me.
Being a left handed guitar player has somewhat limited my options.
Being a left handed, father of five, (read financially challenged)
guitar player has reduced them to sub-atomic levels.
I am however saving up for a lefty Larrivee.
Stay tuned,

Phoenix AZ --Robert A. Heinlein-- (Free Men)
1975 Kohno/Sakurai #5 classical
1989 Santa Cruz OM koa
1995 Nickerson Corona archtop
1995 Breedlove MJ-E 12-string
In other words, one from each of the four major food groups.
Collings OM
I'm convinced the OM is God's own guitar (His is probably
cedar-of-Lebanon and gopherwood) and Collings makes a beauty. So does
Martin, Schoenberg, Santa Cruz, Laravee and just about everybody else.
Washburn D-12-12N
Ten years of 12-string fun for 200 bucks.
Ibanez Artwood AC-70-LG
An exceptionally nice 00-sized cheapo I keep behind the filing
cabinet at work (don't tell).
Yamaha FG 300
An old trooper, now completely worn out. I'm going to give it a
Viking funeral sometime soon.
The man already owns a Stella. Why would he want a Framus? :-)
