I've got a Yamaha FG500 (late sixties ?) & a Gibson L00 (1935).
I got the FG500 second hand in Shaftesbury Avenue (London) in 1976. I think
they only made a few and I've never seen another 500 anywhere. I took
it to a local luthier recently and he had never even heard of that mark, and
he rated it alongside Martins he'd worked on (maybe he was being kind !).
It sounds great, but it isn't that easy to play.I spent 3 months 20 years ago
hitching
around the States going from pawn shop to pawn shop trying to find a cheap Martin
but I ended up with just $150 left the day of my rtn flight and so I spent it on
an old
Jazzmaster
I got the L00 from a man who was selling off all his possessions
before retiring back to India after a lifetime in the British Civil Service. He
had been using it as an hawaian guitar for years and had the action set way high.
The neck
was a bit warped but Andy's fixed it & now it plays great.
I was in Vienna recently & came across a shop-worn Continental Tri-Cone which
the shop owner was selling off cheap. Its a beaut to look at & to play.
When I got back to London I went mad and bought another resonator - this is a cheap

Chinese (?) Dobro copy (Johnson) but it sounds great played lap style with ultra
heavy
gauge strings

The only "acoustic" guitar I own is my Baby-M Taylor. The "acoustic-
electric" guitars I have are:
1. 1996 Taylor 410E
2. Applause 12-string (an-15?) with a metal neck and no truss-rod
3. 1994 Ovation Bass (cc-74)
Both Applaue and Ovation are up for sale.

Partial inventory (they come and they go, and you needn't know EVERYthing I've
got in the house):

Stage guitars:

Larrivee OM-03W, with LR Baggs RT pickup with Micro-EQ installed after
purchase.

This is the best ensemble instrument I've ever owned, and works beautifully as
a solo instrument, as well. Great neck, beautifully figured walnut back and
sides, nice silked top, extraordinary volume and projection. The Micro-EQ is
an onboard preamp with tonal controls that allows me to tweak my stage sound
precisely.

Martin 000-42 copy made by Scott Baxendale, also with LR Baggs RT pickup with
Micro-EQ. My long time main axe, now largely supplanted by the Larrivee, but
still the finest-sounding solo instrument I have.

Tacoma EM-9, with LR Baggs RT pickup with Micro-EQ. I started off with the
Tacoma Tone Bar pickup in this one, but decided I didn't care for the amplified
tone that much.

So I corrected that....

This is the liveliest fingerstyle guitar I own - it's a very modern design,
comparable to Goodalls and Breedloves in terms of touch sensitivity, if not in
materials, fit or finish. But it's an exceptional value at the price, which is
about $600 or less from First Quality and Elderly.

Tacoma Papoose "travel guitar." I put that in quotes, as I don't consider it a
travel guitar so much as I do an Americanized, steel-string requinto, the
Mexican miniature guitar that served as the Papoose's inspiration. It's tuned
A to A, and is a whole different thing than just a "little guitar."

Teisco Del Ray short scale electric bass guitar. An oddball Japanese import
from the mid-Sixties, this instrument features a body that was a copy of the
Rickenbacker "Tulip" body style and a neck that's a direct ripoff of the Fender
Strat. It plays well and sounds amazingly good, however. With its narrow neck
and short scale, it's a very comfortable instrument for guitar players to pick
up and use.

Deering "Boston" model guitar-banjo. What a killer instrument. Great,
straight neck, 26 inch scale.

This instrument, and the more expensive version with the Mastertone pot, are
just about the finest guitar-banjos ever built. The folks at Deering sat down
and figured out some of the engineering problems that have plagued
guitar-banjos since the beginning, and the result is a superbly playable,
wonderful instrument.

Wonderful, that is, if you like the sound of banjos.....

I have a couple of more banjos, including a Mastertone mandolin-banjo and a
five string, but I'll spare you the details. And I'm going to skip the
mandolins and mountain dulcimers, or we'd be here all day.

Last October, I bought a Taylor 812C. This past Friday, I became a 2
Taylor guitar owner when I purchased a Taylor 955, made in 1996. It is
a previously owned guitar which explains why it kept begging me to
adopt it and take it home. It just didn't like hanging out on a wall.
It wants to be loved and played. Now, this guitar has a L.R.Baggs
Ribbon Transducer System on it. Frankly, I'm not real sure I want this
thing on my guitar. I may have it taken off. Thing is I don't know how
to even use it. Guess I'm not very educated about it. I keep thinking
that I should at least try it out. Just not sure what I need to do
that. Do I need some kind of cable? I have a Kurzweil Piano that I
think I could hook it up to and play the guitar through. On the Braggs
site it said you can plug it into anything. Would that work? I'm not
sure so I don't want to mess up either instrument. I'd appreciate any
advice.

Make it a great day!!!
Marge

Well, I figured I was really boring (or p***ing off) everyone since I
joined this great group with my posts about what I have and love, but
since you asked:-).........
* A Larrivee L-03, with an EMG AmpJack pickup (very good pickup for tone
and volume, but a horrible design if you install it yourself)
* Larrivee J-19, with a newly installed B-Band, which is everything and
more that the RMMGA'ers said it was.

Martin OM42PS (Paul Simon) Words fail me about a guitar made in heaven!

Martin D40DM (Don Mclean) Looks great feels great and has it's own great
sound.

Martin HD28 '96 Blew me away when I bought it and still does. Had to
choose recently whether to part with this or my Taylor 812 '89. Was a
hard decision as I actually prefer smaller bodied guitars. still miss
the Taylor but am glad I kept the Martin. Not bad to be able to refer to
this as my cheap Martin!!!!!

Taylor 314CE Just got this from Buffalo Brothers. Not as good a sound as
any of the Martin's or the 812 but at the price a great gigging guitar
especially as it has the Fishman Prefix Blender system installed. I love
the convenience of controls on the guitar.

Plus others not so important.

I own only one guitar, a knockoff of an HD-28 LSH (large sound hole) built
by....me!

I got the bug to build a guitar and went to Nazareth, PA to take the Martin
factory tour. Then I visited the Guitarmaker's Connection store for a
Martin kit. Frank Finnochio helped me select parts off the rack, the same
parts that are used in the factory. He even let me go through the abalone
and select a nicely matched set for the 45-style snowflake fingerboard and
bridge inlay. I got a torch inlay for the headstock and ebony tuner buttons
from other sources.

I built it in the winter of '91-'92, taking about 4 months of evenings and
weekends. The hardest part was getting the finish just right - lots of
sanding and spraying and polishing and rubbing. I listened to lots of good
music as I was building, with the hope that the wood might get an idea of
the kind of tunes I like.

My guitar turned out pretty well; I've had enough compliments on it to think
that at least some are sincere. It's not perfect - the neck is a little,
well, clubby, and the lacquer has cracked some. One winter my family and I
were in "reduced circumstances" and had to heat with wood. That's when I
learned about the importance of keeping a humidifier in a guitar. I also
learned how to repair a crack in a soundboard.

So, it's a little homely but it sounds good, it looks well-used and
therefore happy, and every time I pick it up to play I smile a little
because I built it myself. Perhaps my son and his kids will play it in
years to come.

4 Bozo Podunavac guitars, from 1967, 1996, and 1999 (2). The 1999 ones
are both a custom body shape (& custom cutaway) that Bozo and I had a
friendly collaboration on, and he has only built this body for me, as far
as I know. The '67 is his standard Western Bell Jumbo (Brazilian
Rosewood), and the '96 (East Indian Rosew.) is his newer Western Bell, more
of a dreadnaught size. The '67 and '96 Bozos are for sale....

Jeff Traugott, modified "BK" model, which is somewhat similar (but really
completely different!) to a Santa Cruz FS (which Jeff designed).

Breedlove C-1, #90-001. I don't play this guitar anymore, but it is the
first guitar that the Breedlove boys ever built. Other than being a very
nice guitar, it might be worth something, someday.

One brand spankin' new custom modified Bill Tippin OMT-Cutaway. This
guitar is quite possibly the most perfect guitar for ME that I have ever
touched. El McMeen just showed up at my house with his two-week old custom
modified Tippin Jumbo that is simply a MONSTER guitar. I might need one of
those, too, come to think of it.....

I tell everybody even when I sign my name:

James Goodall Koa/Sitka Standard
Cinnamon-honey flamed koa and a butter sitka top. Flamed maple body
binding, headstock binding and heel cap. Koa & ebony purfling.
Abalone/koa/ebony rosette. Abalone diamond fret markers. Ebony
fingerboard, bound neck, tuner buttons and headstock overlay. Brass/abalone
bridge pins. Clear pickguard. Rings and rings and rings.

Ted Thompson T1 Rosewood/Sitka
Coffee/wine rosewood with a sitka top just starting to age. Maple body
binding. Maple tail inlay. Maple/ebony fingerboard binding with ebony half
moon side fret markers. Koa/ebony purfling. Abalone dot fret markers.
Rosewood headstock overlay. Clear pickguard. This OM style is a new sound
to me, but it is focused, loud, and resonant. I think this luthier is a
sleeper in the guitar building community. This a wonderful guitar.

Fender Eric Clapton Blackie Strat that's been all dressed up! White
motopearl pickguard. Black bevel top knobs and black lever switch knob.
Black Schaller locking graduated post tuners. Black Graph Tech String Saver
saddles. Black graphite nut. Lace Sensor Gold pickups. I live out my
fantasies on this one.

Ok I'll play! I am currently "using" (I don't plan to pull them into the

Martin D15 and a 196? Martin Tiple I hate to admit it but I like the
Martin D15 the best, anyway it makes the sound I like and certainly is
playable. The only modifications to it were rosewood bridge pins and a
bone nut and saddle.

Great story, Rich. <sigh> wish I had the woodworking skills ...

Current guitar inventory includes (in order of acquisition):

-1966 Martin D-35 spuce/Braz. rosewood (obtained in college and NEVER
to be parted with)
-1985 Taylor 555 12-string spruce/mahogany
-1995 Goodall spruce/rosewood Grand Concert cutaway
-1998 Lowden F23 cedar/walnut (mini-jumbo size)

Guitars "on order" so to speak:

-1999 (presumably) Larrivee Parlour (maybe I'll get the first Larrivee
Parlour of the new millennium!)
-"recent" Epiphone Emperor single cutaway (I know Jack Sh*t about
electric guitars, but I'm about to enter the amplified archtop world
via a recent highest bid on eBay...)

That's not to mention the banjos, bouzoukis, bodhrans, dulcimers
(mountain and hammered), whistes, autoharp, etc., etc. lying around.
the house...

I know I'm off topic with the electrics but I see some others have as
well.

Fender Telecaster. (My baby) Bought it new in 1967. Was blonde, now
natural, very lovely ash with a burl grain pattern, flame maple neck/
fingerboard, with those dark stains from use going from 1st to 12th
frets. Added Shaller bridge, Mighty Mite neck pickup and removed a
few windings from it so the 2 pickups are perfectly balanced, 5 way
switch (Off, neck with highs rolled off, neck natural, Neck+bridge,
bridge), pickups are potted eliminating that Tele bridge pickup squeal
feedback, electronics cavities are shielded. Looks/plays/sounds
great! Always my first guitar off the rack when I'm playing an
important date where I need a versatile guitar.

'80's Japanese Stratocaster with Fender Rose. SD Quarter-Pounder
bridge pickup. This the only guitar I own that I'm not very attached
to. My wife says I can replace it soon. I'll probably wind up with a
flame-maple/basswood or ash Tom Anderson or Zion with a HSH pickup
arrangement and advanced switching (split & S/P options).

'93 Taylor Dan Crary Signature dreadnaught with a Truetone M7 system
installed after purchase. Power, sustain, strong overtones, great
balance; a beautiful tone both acoustic and amplified.

'50s Regal acoustic archtop. When my Dad passed away, I went to start
cleaning up his house, opened a closet door and there was my Mom's
(passed away 2 yrs earlier) archtop that I learned to play my first
chords on. What a mess... cleaned it up, put on some medium phosphor
bronze and WOW. Great tone, power, sustain, strong overtones.

'68 L5CES archtop. Venitian cutaway. Killer looks/amplified tone,
Very good acoustic qualities with strong overtones. Plays like a
dream. The The ultimate for the big-band shows I do. I'm toying
with the idea of coil-splitting... I grew up playing Fender.

Until recently I had a Vantage KR-200 laminated koa and solid spruce top
parlour guitar with wide neck and slotted headstock, cost only £190 in
the UK, one of the very best guitars I have ever owned. Korean gloss
finish, but perfect intonation and a sound which made people come up and
ask what the hell it was. Sold it for the same price I bought it for,
back to a dealer, in exchange for bouzouki. Nothing wrong with Vantage
guitars. I bought it on impulse because after trying it in a shop, I
could not let it go. I have still heard nothing else like it and it
resold immediately the dealer bought it back off me - and for £100 more.

What a great topic!

I have two, the are both Maurice Dupont copies of Selmer guitars (used
by Django Reinhardt).
1. Maple body and neck, with a spruce top. Large D-Haped soundhole and
14 fret neck.
2. Eddie Freeman Special tenor guitar. Same D-hole as the one above,
with stripped mahagony back and side, spruce top and walnut neck. It
takes 4 strings tuned (low to high) C-G-D-A. I love playing 'em both!

196? Gibson b-25 12 string. Played this one for my wife on
our first date. That was 25 years ago. It seldom sees the
light of day, but for obvious sentimental reasons I'll never
part with it.

199? Washburn dreadnought acoustic/electric, red. What was
I thinking ? It does sound good when plugged in, though.

1990 Taylor 655 12 string. A blonde monster of a guitar.

199? Taylor 812c It loves DADGAD and I love it.

1999 Chelsvig 6 string, spruce over walnut, 1-7/8 neck,
really cool parrot inlay on the headstock. A truly great
sounding guitar.

Came home from work the other night and my 10-year-old
daughter said "Guess what I want from Santa this year."
"I don't have any idea, tell me." "A small acoustic
guitar." Hmmm. I see a Larrivee Parlor in the crystal
ball.

Here is what's left...

1969 Japanese made Aria (my first "real" guitar) purchased new when I was in
the 4th grade. Most likely laminated TPOS, but it plays well, certainly has
sentimental value and still get played fairly often.

1996 Martin Backpacker (yes, I admit it), bought when traveling for work, for
purposes of mental health and frustration relief. Spent many evenings in Hotel
rooms with this instrument.

1997 Guild JF55-12. Bought brand new and now my main guitar. Felt alive in my
arms when I played it and it would not let me walk away from it. On top of the
GAS symptoms above, the price was a steal!

1966 Epiphone Coronet (solid body electric), purchased in 1975. Replaced
original electronics with two Humbuckers and new bridge. Great blues guitar
with a down and dirty tone.

Have serious GAS for a Larrivee D-03 or OM-03. I need a "good" 6 string don't

1998 Larrivee D10K Dark Orange and Cinnamon Koa, top sides and back

Best sound to my ear is the Koa Larrivee. Wonderful sustain, great note
seperation, good fundementals with wonderful overtones. Visually, it's the darkest
koa I've seen and while not the most flamed, it has excellent figure. The flamed
curly maple binding really sets off the looks of this guitar. The abalone purfling
adds a beautiful accent to the koa top.

All the rest are great guitars and still make it into my hands as often as I have
time.
They share what little time I have with:

1984 Ome Columbine III banjo Amber curly maple with carved reonator, heal and back
of peghead. Gold plated, hand engraved metal work. (primary instrument in the

1998 Breedlove K-5 serial # K-5 004 (Closest I could come to the first from
Breedlove, Larry) Cascade Mandolin in burnt amber sunburst, curly maple/sitka

194? Epiphone B-5 3/4 Double Bass
199? Regal Resophonic Guitar
197? Appilachian Mountain Dulcimer

OK...

* 1982 Lowden O-something, cedar/rosewood. Big + loud but too heavy
for the travellin' life
* 1998 Baby Taylor for travelling with
* 1984 custom resonator (see http://www.groucho.demon.co.uk/reso.htm).
All mahogany, very heavy, very loud... and currently for sale.

Currently investigating getting a small bodied instrument made - no

Wow, Julian, you move fast! Who is Peter Abnett? Where can I read
about his guitars? What happened to Brook? And why can't I stop asking
all these questions... ?

Best wishes,

Bought the Parker so I would never have to worry about my beautiful

it a try...I was impressed and oh yes put a POD in line with your
favorite amp.

Okay, I'll bite. I'm trying to get out of this lurking mode that I've
been in on this group since '95 anyway.

Acoustic Steel-string:

1997 Webber RB Cedar/Extra-Figured Walnut w/Highlander - WOW!

1999 Bourgeios JR-A (ANYBODY see the thread?)

1991 Taylor 812c w/factory pickup - Fishman? (first real acoustic)

1992?(I think, not with me at the moment) Taylor LKSM-12

Others:

1998 Contreras II C4-S (classical)

1989 Gibson L4-CES

(A few electrics that rarely get played (although I do have a nice
re-issue Fender Japanese Tele thinline))

Looking:

Maybe one of those Parlor guitars for the office. <<You know, from
Olson :)

on the RMMGA CD list everyday.)

Geez! I better get in here before we break the RMMGA longest thread
record :)

I've owned many acoustics over the years but presently only have two :
A Seagull S6 Cedar which has one of the best tones I've ever heard.
Not a T.P.O.S. and an old Ovation/Applause a truely original T.P.O.S.
which I use exclusively for open tunings and some slide work.
Nothing fancy but they work for me.
Being a left handed guitar player has somewhat limited my options.
Being a left handed, father of five, (read financially challenged)
guitar player has reduced them to sub-atomic levels.
I am however saving up for a lefty Larrivee.

Stay tuned,
RKM

An Irish harp in disguise.

Collings OM
I'm convinced the OM is God's own guitar (His is probably
cedar-of-Lebanon and gopherwood) and Collings makes a beauty. So does
Martin, Schoenberg, Santa Cruz, Laravee and just about everybody else.

Washburn D-12-12N
Ten years of 12-string fun for 200 bucks.

Ibanez Artwood AC-70-LG
An exceptionally nice 00-sized cheapo I keep behind the filing
cabinet at work (don't tell).

Yamaha FG 300
An old trooper, now completely worn out. I'm going to give it a
Viking funeral sometime soon.
