This stinks. I've got a wart located on my left middle finger. It aligns
directly with the strings on my guitar and is pretty damn painful to play
(at times). Any suggestions on how to continue playing at the same time I'm
trying to get rid of it. I started with some Compound W, but wearing a
band-aid just doesn't cut it when it comes time to play..

Help......if you can.

While I have never tried to play with a wart on my finger, I have been able to
play with open cuts and sores by using a product called NuSkin. It is a liquid
bandage that is in a clear, thick, almost gel like form. It brushes on and
dries in a few minutes to a hard and tough coating over the problem area. It
will last for several days through the toughest activities, even hot bath
water. It can be found in some pharmacies or medical supply stores. I suspect
that most, if not all, of the substance is nothing more than super glue, but in
a thick, slow running form.

You could probably simply use super glue, but this stuff is a lot safer and
easier to control.

Hey Scratch,
Time to bite the bullet and get yourself to the dermatologist. They will "burn"
them off with liquid nitrogen (I believe) and they heal pretty quickly. I had
one removed from my right hand pinky. It was constantly coming back no matter
what I did, but the treatment that I got at the doctor did the trick. Yes, it
does hurt a bit , but you're a guitar player, right? You've got to suffer if
you want to sing the blues
Go for it! No pain, no gain.

I went to the dermatologist about a week age to have a wart removed.
He froze it a little, gave me a prescription for Zantac, and told me
to take 75000 units of beta carotene a day for three weeks. It is just
about gone.

I know this sounds kind of wierd, but to get rid of a wart...use a
potato. Yep, one of those white potatos...cut a piece of potato to fit
over the wart...use a bandaid to keep it in place. It will take a few
days, but the potato will make the wart go away. There is a chemical
reaction that takes place. You will feel the sensation. It doesn't hurt
just feels wierd. Use a fresh piece of potato and new bandaid as
needed. This really works.

MAKE it a GREAT day!!!

Come on! I can't believe that a potato can rid yourself of a wart......Have
you ever tried it?

YES, Honest to God it works! My husband's family used this cure for
years. I know it sounds strange, and I was skeptical too, but by golly,
it works. Try it you have nothing to lose but a potato. It's
inexpensive, too.

A smart aleck like you probably looked good wearing it too. Don't knock
it til you've tried it.

Sounds like the placebo effect, you could probably do just as well with a
turnip, carrot or stump water.

Ahhhh, the skeptic speaks. Go ahead pay a doctor, it makes no
difference to me. The thing is it works, and no it isn't a placebo.

And when you're done removing the wart, you can eat the potato.

I don't know what I can add (especially in the face of the "potato"
recommendation), but I've had a number of warts in my lifetime...which have
been removed by a number of different techniques:

1) Burning off. This was when I was a kid. I had 6 or 7 warts in various
places on my feet. The doctor used this thing that was reminiscent of a
soldering iron...no kidding. It was pretty unpleasant, but it took care of
the warts!

2) Freezing off. The liquid nitrogen trick. This didn't work for me, and
simply supported my theory that most dermatologists are simply interested in
having their patients come back to them forever and ever. I've heard of it
working for other people...but maybe they went to dermatologists that
haven't been seduced by the dark side of the force...or maybe they had GPs
do it. I don't know.

3) Compound W / DuoFilm. These things work, but if you'd like to get rid of
the wart sometime before the sun goes supernova, you have to accelerate the
process. I found that by soaking the area of the wart in water every couple
of days, and *carefully* cutting away the dead skin with a nice clean
sterile razor blade really helped.

4) Mechanical Removal. I've had a couple of really stubborn warts that
didn't want to yield to the Compound W / DuoFilm trick. (My youthful
experience with the soldering iron has effectively kept me out of doctor's
offices ever since.) I don't really recommend this method, because it's easy
to hurt yourself, but it does work. I got a surgical scalpel, and cut deep
enough to remove the damn thing. It didn't come back. :)

When I was about 10 years old I had a few warts on my hand that I didn't
like (no kid would) and I had them treated repeatedly by a dermatologist--
frozen, burned, and a few others things --but they kept coming back. You
know what eventually worked? Self hypnosis. It took about a month of
meditation and they were gone, never came back. I was taught the technique
by a licensed psychiatrist that worked with my father, so it was legit as
far as I know. Certainly better than liquid nitro, which I recall was
kinda painful.

Still, for that nasty finger wart, I'd go with the GEL form of Compound W
and cover it with NuSkin when it dries. Remember that it needs to be
soaked and debrided regularly though, or nothing will happen to the wart.

I have a small wart on the side of the first joint of my index finger, and
so I purchased Dr Scholl's "Clear Away" wart removal disks, which contain
salicylic acid. After about three treatments (one stick-on disk every 48
hours) I found that the wart was shrinking, but the salicylic acid was also
apparently dissolving the callous on my fingertip, making playing suddenly
painful! Needless to say, I have discontinued use of this product.

I'm going to get it burned or frozen off, I guess. Be careful with
do-it-yourself surgical removal, though, because warts are actually viral
infections limited to the dermal layer of the skin. If you cut it open, the
virus can spread to other areas of your body or to other people.
