I just returned from Santa Clara, CA where I heard a fine concert by
Doug Young, Goh Kurosawa, and our own Fran Guidry.

The concert was part of a monthly event that Doug (contributing editor
of Acoustic Guitar Magazine) has been putting on for 5 years now. What
a great service to the acoustic guitar community!

All played great. Goh was not on my radar at all until this week, when
friend Dorian Michael mentioned him to me. He's a very interesting
player, playing both nylon and steel strings, with a great deal of
multi-cultural influence...an interesting harmonic language. Doug was
his usual thoughtful, musical self. I enjoy his playing a lot. In
addition to his go-to Ryan, he was playing the brand new Martin maple
edition Laurence Juber, and it sounded great. I played LJ's for about a
half-hour last weekend, and I really like it.

Fran sounded sweet, playing his Yamamoto OM. His sense of and love for
Hawaiian music is profound. Sweet, sweet tone. And Fran: thanks for
playing Isa Lei so beautifully for me! And thanks for the
acknowledgement, but I don't live quite as far away as LA... it's San
Luis Obispo, only about half way to LA. Great to hear Grandfather's
Clock tonight. I think that the last time I heard you play it was at
your house at a Muriel Anderson concert back about, what? 8 years ago?
You know, that was my very first time to hear a world-class solo
guitarist! That planted the seed for me. LJ finished the job about 4
years later, and it changed my guitar life (not to mention my practice
time!) forever. So my mania about playing guitar is partially your
fault ;-)

A fun evening, following a fun couple of hours at Sylvan Music in Santa
Cruz, and a beautiful drive.

Thanks for the reminder of your location, Jenn. I'm a big fan of the
midcoast, kinda think I should have moved down there before it
exploded.

Reminding me of that Muriel show is very kind of you. That was quite
an event and one that has echoed through our lives in different ways
ever since.

We're starting to think about this year's guitar party, we're vaguely
aiming for some nice June weather. I'll let you know as soon as we get
a fix on things.

Lordie, I just pulled up Ed Gerhardt. Now I'm even more embarrassed
than I was last night. What gorgeous playing and arranging. Thanks for
reminding me to listen to this again. Hey, he just threw in a Ry
Cooder lick. I bet he has that Pahinui Brothers album too.

Hey, the vast majority of us can only aspire to Ed's playing and
arranging! His Isa Lei is really special, I think. And YOU played it
beautifully as well, my friend!

I love Ed's House of Guitars" CD on which he plays a variety of fairly
ordinary guitars and makes them all sound great.

That is good Fran. Too bad LA and SF are so far away. I would love to
see you in a couple of weeks. - Robert

Break a leg at Kathy's - I hope your audience is as warm and generous
as mine was.
