Well, definitely precocious -- she displays a pretty good understanding
of a song that she's several years away from experiencing, one hopes:-)
Nonetheless, it was nicely done.

Nifty.
How old do you think she is? 12?

Hmmmmm .......save it for the judge and jury Larry....i think she's
nine !!
I showed it to my ten year old son and we both laughed at her very
cocky prima donna body language....
she's got talent though....she's just too aware of it.

I deal with a lot of young kids through the Portland Guitar Society.
This fellow Old Fart is solidly in the Talented camp. I would say she has
confidence and is having fun. Pray that Disney never discovers her.

We need to get Ovation education out of our homes and schools,

I think Mom and/or Dad are probably performers. I see the same thing in
young Classical performers who have been "coached" by their teachers.
It's sometimes hard to not chuckle when a 9 year old, with a full size
guitar, takes that dramatic pause for focus before the first note and
then proceeds to blow your mind.
I've watched a young player develop from a beginner to an accomplished,
touring professional at 16, with a GFA competition win a couple of years
ago.

It really grated on me, sorta like people who abuse apostrphes. (or
apostrophe's) She pronounced the words wrong - in every verse she
sang "but you don't really care for music do YOOO" and "Her beauty and
the moonlight overthrew YOOO". grrrrr Those lines are supposed to
rhyme with "Hallelujah", not "HalleluYOOO". "but you don't really
care for music do YA" and "Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew YA"
Thus she missed one of the prominent hooks in the song (like Pat Boone
wanting to sing that Fats Domino song "Isn't that a shame, my tears
fell like rain...", and it renders the song unlistenable, IMHO. I
would certainly not call it a "pretty good understanding of the song."
As for the level of "understanding of the song" having to do with the
meaning of the lyrics, I think 95% of the people who hear that song
don't understand it, and I saw no evidence in the video that this girl
is any different.
She may have talent and could mature into a wonderful artist, but I
don't think it will be on the strength of this performance.

I thought Pat really captured the gritty essence of Tutti Frutti.

shut up and play your guitar
I haven't hit the link and won't. But last week at a restaurant where a
true hero of music, (who happens to be an old fart, even older than I
am) has been holding court once a week, a gal in her twenties came up
after other folks had gotten the whole room going very well, and
proceeded to bring the room to a polite halt.
She preened and butt-wiggled and ran her hand through her hair between
chord changes and vocal lines, posturing ridiculously, just generally
doing the bullshit diva thing. Fletcher got up and went into the bar
area to watch the World Series.
Then instead of singing her three tunes and stepping down as had far
better artists, she went on for another two songs. You could almost hear
the room snoring between rounds of courteous applause.
I turned to Shaidri and said, "Some people have spent much more time
watching 'music' videos than they have learning to play their guitar".
As one LA to another you really should ease up a bit. Taking pot shots
at people you do not like does not get you anything, so stop being a
jerk and see a joke for what it is ...unless you own one of those
things. If I had one I would put a plant in it and hang it in the
bathroom :-)

Oh hell, me and Sorell are always joshing around..........He compares
me to a mass murderer.... and I call him a snob jerk-off
Seriously, have you ever played an Ovation? They have a nice small,
fast neck suitable for a kid.... almost bought one for my
granddaughter a while ago.
Larry I'd like to invite you up to Wisconsin for a couple of days
sometime after you recover. You're in Des Moines right?..That's about
250 miles from me. We jam non-stop on Tuesday evenings for about 4
hours.... you'll love it. If you can't drive up yourself, I'll come
down and get you. Maybe I can set something up for a weekend and we
can coax Wilbur and some others from the area to come down to Fountain
City WI for the day ( across the river from Winona MN)..... you can
judge for yourself what kind of guy I am.

Yeah, doesn't your bathroom stink enough?
Why Lenny sees my silly Ovation joke as a put down of the child is beyond
me. But then, Lenny's whole agenda of being a boorish, mean spirited,
unhappy old poop is also beyond me. I wonder how a person can live with
that kind of anger festering inside. I've suggested more fiber in his
diet. Maybe a high colonic enema would be better. Possibly this would
work for him:

LOL! Its the other way around...I once had a cactus die! I have one
large Jade plant is the ONLY one I have kept alive. I think a plant in
an Ovation on a wall in the john would be cool. My sister does
gardening, and gets if from our mother. My dad and I could not grow
weeds LOL!

I'd never get away with that. Lanis would declare it ugly and donate it

I've noticed that a quite lot of well known performers use the non
rhyming "you" in that song, and always think that it's a shame that they
allow "correct" language to take precedence over art.
MJRB
I do my gardening with Glyphosate.
MJRB
The dummies didn't bother to learn it from Leonard's singing. I don't
care how well known they are, they are singing it wrong, according to
how the composer sings it. There's nothing "correct" about that
particular usage of language on their part.
I didn't see anything wrong with it. She played the guitar, she sang,
she tried to look cute, or sassy and maybe more adult than a girl that
age should by tossing her hair but the main thing is that she was
comfortable playing that finger style guitar and do a decent job of
singing the song.

My favorite of Sam's is her killer rendition of "Sweet Lorraine."

I think she's talented too and if she's my daughter, I'm proud. OTOH,
her voice and mannerisms seemed to grate on me. But she seemed into
it, maybe a little posed, but fairly genuine. Some tweeking on the
recording could make the voice less grating probably.
Another thing - I just have this feeling she's too "young" for that
song (one of the great lyrics imho). Part of the grating for me
probably. Just incongruous?
I don't care much for young people doing some of the adult love songs,
and I'm not talking about the modern stuff that is crass whoever sings it.
I mean, a young performer doing "Yesterdays" or "Don't Blame Me" or
"Love For Sale". It doesn't work IMHO.
MJRB
I definitely don't want to hear her rendition of 'My
Way'.....imagine....
"....and now, the end is near......."
mind you,....on the other hand....
"...yes there were times, i'm sure you knew....when i bit off....more

I dunno - Michael Jackson did all his best soul singing before his
voice broke (not that it broke very far..)
Pete
Hmmm.... It has taken me a lifetime to "get" Leonard Cohen, and I still
don't understand him. So how in the world could a child this age?
This young girl has the capacity to be talented. She can sing on key, and
she has the basic ability to play the guitar. The problem here is NOT hers,
but that of the adult(s) who coached her, and the adult who suggested that
she sing this song, which is totally wrong for a child this age. She could
not possibly comprehend, on any level, what this song is about. So how can
she sing it in any genuine fashion?
This reminds me of kids who participate in beauty contests... you know, the
Jon Bonets of the world, and their parents, who dress them in clothes that
are inappropriate, put make-up on them, and teach them to primp and preen in
order to appear "sexy"... which is exactly what this child is doing. I can
just imagine her voice teacher, standing off to the side coaching her on
elocution. The fault here is NOT the child's. She needs a warm empathetic
adult in her life who can nurture her talent and help her to appreciate
herself just as she is... which at the moment is a little girl... not an
adult woman.
Just my two cents worth...

"Kol_Isha" - A Woman's Voice
I dunno - my 8-year-old daughter watched the video with me, and then
she insisted on watching the song by all sorts of other people on
you-tube, and she loves the song and now she wants to sing it. That
she doesn't understand it doesn't seem to me to be a big deal. I'm
not so sure thatg *I* understand it either. She just likes the
melody, the sounds of the words and the way it can be sung. I
certainly don't think it's on par with Jon-Benet Ramsay "sexy" stuff.
It's not a Barry White song, fer gawd's sake.
But my daughter sings "do YA", not "do Yooooo"...
