I have been saving for a Santa Cruz Vintage artist that my local music
store had in stock for about year and that I loved. Last week I went in
to play it and put some moola down on it and it was gone, they had just
sold it the day before. I was bummed. I had played about 100 guitars
all over the cities and this was my favorite.
So, on my way home bummed I stopped by MARS to look around and saw a
cool looking Martin on the wall and thought I would give it a try. I
saw the SPD-16R designation inside and thought, "this will be a
disappointment". It was amazing, and cheap! Honest to god, I have
$2500 burning a hole in my pocket for a Santa Cruz and I am about to buy
this $1100 Martin. It was balanced, full, loud and easy as hell to
play, plus it had some time ababolne trim, a snowflake markers and an
upgraded Martin wood case. I played it for about an hour and compared
it to every other guitar I could find and loved it.
Anyone else played one of these? I am amazed how much I like it and how
great it played compared to even the HD-28 on the wall and the Taylors.
How do they make them so cheap? Why are they so cheap? Am I missing
something?

Thanks
Harry

Hello Harry,
I have the plainer D-16TR from 1997. Same guitar, less gingerbread. I went
to get a SPD, but I like the sound of this one. Any way, it's about 4 years
old now, and I still find few guitars that I prefer over it. The HD-28 is a
little to bassy for me (I tend to like the regular D-28 better). The SPD-16R
is not has loud or has complex sounding has my D-42, but has a great warm
sound. It's a great value in the Martin lineup.

Computer run machines do a bit more work on the 16 series than the Standard
series. Also, the 16s have a simpler neck joint.

The above will show you the bracing pattern of different Martins.

No,it seems you found it. If the guitar speaks to you, I think you better
get it (if you're looking to buy).

Good luck,

I've never played the Santa Cruz, but my SPD-16R is one of my favorites
after owning it for about two years now. I would upgrade the cheap case they
come with if I were doing it again, but I really love the guitar. I also
have a 000-16 and a Taylor 314K, and while I love their smaller sizes for
ease of handling, the SPD-16R really commands booms it out at my outdoor
playing.

Try the Santa Cruz too! Good luck.

Dennis

These are very nice guitars for the money. My cousin has one and if it
sounds good to you and plays well...Go for it...Being a Martin, it will
always hold its value and it should hold up well over time. While I am
personally not a fan of Martin guitars, it is just a personal thing for me
and my style. They are very good guitars and some of them like the SPD-16R
can be had for a good price...

You are not seeing anything wrong at all. I am seeing people all the time
come in and play and fall in love with them. It is a really nice guitar in
both sound and the way it is made for the money. I have seen more Martins
selling then the Taylor line in the last year or so. Even the cheaper line
of Martins seem to be selling well. Go for what your ear tells you, and I
think the 16 line is a great thing.
