Hello, Canadian cousins. Once again I hope to draw on your collective wisdom.

I hope to visit Vancouver, BC, and possibly Victoria, as well, this fall. I
might buy a Seagull while there (a guitar, not a federally protected migratory
waterfowl.) I've had a couple of stores recommended to me: the chain of Long &
McQuade, and Tom Lee Music on Granville in Vancouver.

Do any of you have opinions on these stores? Are there any others in that area
that you might suggest?

Thanks in advance for any information you might provide.

Wade, if you have the time, take the ferry from Victoria to Anacortes,
Washington and stop in at Anacortes Music. They have some handmade
guitars, as well as octave mandos and bouzoukis, by Bill Petersen that
are worth a look, IMHO.

The ferry ride alone is worth the trip. :-)

Peter, I'd love to, but I'll be sneaking away for a long weekend as it is, so I
seriously doubt that I'll have the time. I just took the Alaska State Marine
Highway Ferry from Valdez to Cordova and back again through the splendors of
Prince William Sound, so it isn't like I never get to see gorgeous scenery.
But it sounds like a terrific idea. I'll see if it's feasible.

The ferry ride is incredible, just got back from Vancouver and Victoria. I
checked out both stores and found a greater selection of Seagulls at Tommy
Lee's. Although you might want to keep in mind that Long and McQuaid is the
Canadian distributor for Gibson and Epiphone. Great selection of those.
Have a good trip

Not sure if they sell Seagulls but while you are in Vancouver you
might want to also look at Not Just Another Music Shop which is about
1 1/2 blocks south of Long and McQuade on Granville and Rufus Guitar
Shop at 2621 Alma St. To get there from Long and McQuade go south
on Granville two blocks to Broadway, turn right, keep going west about
20 blocks until Broadway turns from a four lane to a two lane road.
Thats at Alma St. Turn left and go south for 1 1/2 blocks - Rufus
is on the right.

Hi Wade

I am not a big fan of Tom Lee's......Lots of guitars. There is 'the
room' with high end instruments. You might want to call to see if
they carry Seagull's. I personally prefer L&M. I live in Victoria
and have weeded out a number of shops. Old Town Strings on Johnson St
may carry Seagull's. They are a 'very good' shop. I know they carry
Martins, Larivees and I think Seagulls. We all have our preferences.
I play a Taylor 614c but if I were to get another guitar I might this
time seriously consider a Larivee. Call the shops before you come up
to see which lines they carry. Stay away from Tempo Trend in
Victoria. Although they carry some good stuff, the owner's son sees
only $$$ and talks the b.s. to get you to buy. That has terminated my
shopping there. I really respect the staff at L&M. Good Luck. With
the $ exchange you should be able to do some fine shopping.

Regards, Karen Lajoy

I found the people at Mothers Music downtown (near the granville street
bridge - 1200 or 1300 block I think) to be friendly & helpfull and not too
pushy. I have purchased from Long & Mcquade in Edmonton and they were
great, but the guys in Vancouver were much too busy to help me when I was
looking for a new guitar.
hope this helps

Wade, I realize this post is long (as in McQuade) after the fact, but I
thought I should relate that I too found myself in Toronto exactly one year
ago, supposedly on "business" and after shopping around quite a bit found
Long & McQuade to be pretty down to earth and ready to do business. I
bought a slightly shopworn Seagull 6+ 12 string for $350 Canadian, which is
as close as I have come to a free guitar in years. I took the Metro from
downtown and was not even slightly molested while carrying my prize back to
my hotel. It was all very disappointing to a former Washington DC resident
who was ready to do battle with all sorts of miscreants, but he folks in
Toronto seem amazingly civilized. Especially considering the low value of
the Canadian dollar. Wonderful country. I hope you had a good time while
visiting--I certainly did.

Ummm... and the connection between acting civilized and the value of
the Canadian dollar would be what, exactly?

Excuse me for sticking my nose in and answering the ?, but I think that Tim was
trying to say something like, 'wouldn't you be a little po'ed if your money was
worth, say 20% less today than it was a couple months ago?', that is, it might
contribute to some in some big cities to act less than civil.

Well, the people outside Toronto are equally affected and are just as
likely to be a little surly.

Thank you for hitting the nail on the head regarding the relation between

economic factors and violent crime. Lets watch gun free Canada turn into a
mosh pit. Now lets get back to guitars and hope the exchange rate doesn't
screw Canadian Luthiers. BTW, if you want to see a bunch of normally
placid.polite Canadians go nuts and trash a place, follow a busload of them
to an American ski resort. Turnabouts fair play, I guess.
