Poor man's pegwinder.

My dog ate my pegwinder. No, seriously, about a year and a
half ago.
I was changing strings, happened to glance at the (open)
metric socket set. A 17mm fit perfectly on the tuner knob,
and now I have a racheted pegwinder that the dog would
break her teeth on. If you do the thing where you use a short
extension, hold the extension/socket between your ring
and middle fingers and turn the ratchet with your thumb,
the whole process goes lickety split.
Your socket size may vary.

Someone, maybe Kevin, gave me a shafted pegwinder. I invested $10 in an
electric screwdriver. Together they make the job a lot quicker and easier.

I use one of the yellow (why do they make them yellow?) plastic hand crank
thingies. It's about the best $2.99 I've spent on guitar gadgets. It works
like a charm. It's almost like a ritual (or therapy, perhaps). I use up
between 15 and 20 min. changing a set of strings. I think I could do it
quicker but why? (grin)

(grin) A "salesdood" looked at me funny when I said a 12 string was an
instrument you spend half your time tuning... and the other half playing
out of tune. I will admit my 12 string takes about 30 min. What I really
need to come up with, is a little hook (like an ice skate hook) to make
stretching the strings a little easier.

I enjoy changing strings - get out the polish, poke around a bit. give
the guitar a bit of an inspection, buff up the neck...

Especially on a 12-string. Never thought an electric screwdriver

About the same here. In fact, I find I end up changing strings on all
my friends (both of them) guitars. I take my time, use one of the
orange (never seen yellow) hand cranks, stretch 'em with my fingers.
Works for me.
